A Pop of Neutral: the rare, dressed-for-dinner edition

Went out for a spontaneous dinner with an age-old friend. Afterward, he asked me to take a pic of the outfit he wore with his new scarf (it's totally contagious). Of course I obliged - and then naturally had to take an outfit pic of my own! Exposure provided by some very brightly-lit street advertisements.

I know the warm, brown booties with the cool-toned outfit are going to make some teeth itch out there. However, I really like the look and feel it is the equivalent of a pop of color (without having to wear color).

PS: I need a hair trim so bad it hurts! How do you fellow short-tressed ladies keep up? I feel like my cut goes from great to meh to argggg! in just a couple weeks.

Cute outfit! The brown boots don't bother me, but I think it's the bag that supplies the pop, at least in this picture.
I get my hair cut every four weeks. My hairdresser cuts it short enough that it still looks good the fourth week even though I can tell it's getting long when I run my hands through it.

My hair starts to look mangy at 5 weeks and its not even that short. I can go a lot longer but the roots would kill me.

I like this a lot. The contrasts while low and tonal actually work well. On the hair front, I am ready to cut my own lol. Mine goes from fab to yuck in 24 hrs. I really can't go longer than 6 weeks;)

I do like the silhouette and layering here!  But, count me as one of the ones who wants to see a cool black or grey pair of booties with this outfit.  (Sorry.)  Maybe I'm just too much on team match.  (Auto-correct won't let me write "match-y" -- what up Apple?   Surely match-y is getting up there with "OMG" or "WTF" right?)

Your teal leather jacket is such a great fit.  I love the way you've mixed the cool and warm tones so effectively and the bag really pops the outfit.  YLF!

I think this looks great and I am really loving this little bag :)

You look good! I think the Uggs would have looked good here.

If I block out the brown boots and imagine black that satisfies my matchy-matchy urges but actually I really like the warmth of the brown in this context. It suits the streetscape.
I echo Alexandra word for word on tending short hair. Best to get in to your stylist a wee bit sooner and get it cut before it blows out.

No teeth itching here. I often look to purposely add a pop of warm or cool.

I love this look and the brown booties are a nice surprise. That's another reason for me to keep my hair long.

I like the brown booties, and I'm glad to see that someone else does this in an outfit. I do it for the same reason, to add a pop of (neutral) color. Sometimes I feel all black can be boring, and I like to mix things up!

When I was on top of things I made my next appt when leaving the salon. Now I have a slightly longer lower maintenance 'do and one big reason is that I didn't want to be at the salon that often, both financially and purely for time management.

I like the brown booties for a change of pace from black or grey. I did something similar yesterday with black top, jeans and tan cowboy boots.

I hear you about the haircuts. I am already feeling scraggly and I have a few more weeks before I'll be back home where I can get my hair tended to. I'm worried what my roots will look like by then!

Love that jacket in you Rae and although I probably would have gone with black boots the brown ones don't make my teeth itch!

I get my hair trimmed every four weeks religiously. Seriously, in 5 weeks it loses its shape and starts to get bulky.

I've really started to love brown + black.  For me it started with a love affair with cognac + black, and then was a quick slide into brown + black!  And that moto is fantastic - fit, color, style are perfect.  And from ebay.  How do you do that?!  Love it!

Fantastic outfit. I love the brown boots with it.

  • Marmee replied 10 years ago

Love the outfit, especially the jacket but I might be one of the dental scratchers.  It's the brown with the handbag that I find difficult.

What a fun night! You look great here, all lit up by the street lights. :)
I love the way you combined the neutrals. To my eye, it's very modern to mix cool and warm neutrals, it provides some nice contrast. Like that fabulous bag does!

I as like the brown "pop of color".
As a short haired person I do not go the my hair dresser often enough and she always gripes at me for that. However I think a good hair cut really helps. I can go for two month and still get compliments on my hair. Also I have high lights in my black black hair and it makes the style more polished. I think.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

My teeth don't itch. I like your analogy to the warm neutral as color.
My hair is longer and I try to go eight weeks to save money, but 6-7 would be better, depending on how well the last cut is growing out.

  • deb replied 10 years ago

I like the brown booties. When my hair was short I had to have it cut every 4 weeks. I had a standing appointment.

  • annagybe replied 10 years ago

Sorry, teeth itcher here. It reminds me of this well dressed guy I once saw on the bus, grey suit, purple-blue striped shirt and brownish tan dress shoes it did not go at all.
Also everything is low key and rugged, a bit distressed and the bag is so stark, clean and optic.

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Cool, warm, whatever! It's all neutral and it works beautifully!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Count me in the team "love the brown boots here" ! Actually if your moto is teal it is actually warmer that cooler in color and teal and brown work very well together.
As for the hair: I think it depends how good your cut is and how fast your hair grows. Mine grows like crazy! If it is all short I can go 5 weeks between cuts but no more until I feel sloppy. If I have longer part of it even 5 weeks is too long!

  • Dee replied 10 years ago

I think your bag is also a lovely pop of (sort of) color!

The need for more frequent cuts is my only downside in going to short hair. I've finally found a good hairstylist that cuts it a wee bit shorter than is ideal that first week but in a way that grows out well, so I can stretch the usual 4-5 weeks to every 6 or so.

  • Scarlet replied 10 years ago

You look lovely. I feel the same way about the boots and the other neutrals. I think of my rust brown boots as almost like wearing orange when I pair them with blues or grays. That is so funny that your friend wanted to "record" his new scarf :)

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

    Killer

One of your best for 2013.
