2nd Review: Getwear.com Custom Jeans (pic heavy)

The second "draft" of my Getwear Custom Jeans arrived today -- what a difference a rise measurement makes!

You may remember that I was dubious about the custom experience when I reviewed the first draft here:
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....stom-jeans

I wrote to the company to explain my fit issues, and I was very impressed with representative Maria's level of communication and attention to detail. I had requested that they change the front rise and back pocket angles on the revised pair, and she was eager to meet my requirements -- no arguments or excuses or insistence that I was somehow wrong (yes, believe me, that has happened to me elsewhere).

Maria clearly explained that post-washing shrinkage made the back pocket measurements hard to match exactly, and that conversation gave me the opportunity to ask that they err on the side of closer-set pockets (as opposed to wider-set pockets). She also let me know the mechanical difficulties involved in keeping the same number of front buttons due to my lower-than average rise. I had a brief scare when she said they could only include two buttons - that wasn't the design I ordered! - but this turned out to simply be a miscommunication between us. She meant two buttons *in addition* to the tab closure - all good. I really felt like I was working with a knowledgeable person creating a product especially for me.

I also started to worry a bit about my order after a week passed with no communication - had they forgotten about my revisions? Were they only worried about new business and unconcerned about my satisfaction now that I'd already paid? Quite the contrary - when I inquired, I was pleased to learn that the delay was caused because Getwear had taken the time to recreate my pattern *by hand* in order to adjust the original, software-produced pattern. This boosted my confidence a lot, considering all the horror stories I'd read about other custom jeans companies revising one measurement at a time in a pattern program without thought for the overall fit.

Perhaps most interesting of all was that, during the revision conversations, Maria also wrote to ask me follow up questions about my opinions on the denim quality. But wait! I'd never emailed her to complain about the denim quality... it turns out that Getwear had seen my initial review and wanted to hear more about my expectations. In a world where I often feel irrelevant as a relatively low-spending consumer, I was pleased with this level of concern, attention, and consideration.

Now that I have the final product, I'm *very* pleased. The fit really makes all the difference in the look and feel of the jeans - the denim drapes better on my body, the angles of the pockets work with my narrow hips and full backside, and the overall effect is much more luxe. Even my DH, who has high standards for the rear view and is generally skeptical of skinny jeans, approved the look.

***ETA***
I just measured, and the front rise is still not the 7" that I requested. I have a feeling this is due to my request that they also keep the correct number of buttons.

Included in the below detail shots are close-ups to demonstrate construction, denim texture, and several cute branding elements that I did not mention before. I particularly like the tiny metal scissors on the leather label and the "lucky penny" embossed with the year of production.

I would recommend Getwear.com to:

- Anyone who is genuinely hard to fit and has never found that perfect pair of jeans. I feel confident that Getwear's team will listen to your issues, *understand* your issues, and get you sorted.

- Someone who has fallen madly in love with a paritcular, unique design that does not exist in real life.

- Someone who has fallen madly in love with a particular, unique design that only exists in a cut/color/size/length that is not flattering to them.

Other things to note:
- Although I didn't see this information on the website, the jeans are shipped from India.

- The FedEx shipping parameters require signature for delivery - if you have your jeans sent to an empty house, you'll either have to authorize them to leave it unattended or pick it up from your local FedEx location.

- I paid for my pair of Getwear jeans, wrote this review without prompting, and have no connection to the company. All my opinions are my own.

They look great! I'm so glad that it all worked out for you, even better that you can go back and re-order as needed.

Goodness, Rae --- they DO look like they were made just for you! That IS a fabulous fit. Love the cute print on the pockets and interfacing.

I'd probably get some metal type and hot-press my name into the label or something... but that's just me, can't stand an empty label ;-)

Looks great on you! I'm glad it all worked out in the end and that you got exactly what you wanted. It sounds like custom jeans works great if you really know your own body and know a lot about denim and fit. I'm not sure I'd have the know-how to even ask for what I need! I'm so impressed with your knowledge!

PS: You need to emboss UWP onto that label ASAP! :)

Gasp! Manidipa and Natalie, what a fab idea! Now my brain is buzzing with ideas for an UWP logo... O_O

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

When you come up with a logo, make one for me too! :)

Just like when Angie was saying Nicole was the aspirational model for F21--you're the aspirational model for UWP. I can pretend to be UWP for a day but you live and breathe it!

Those jeans are amazing! The service sounds above and beyond so that is a huge win.

  • fashionista replied 11 years ago

I love jeans and yours are no exception. They really have very nice customer service. Hats off to them.
And those shoes are a darling.

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

Wow, these are awesome. I'm glad companies in India are catching on to the custom Western clothing market.

So can we order the Rae model ourselves? What you've designed, aside from the rise probably being lower than I'd wear, is what I'd pick too!

And can I help design a UWP logo? I still think we need our own clothing company!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

    Yes, Una, these are them:

Supposedly, I can earn up to $10 when someone orders my design? I only see a small blurb about this and can't find an in-depth explanation.

I will definitely keep you and Natalie in the logo loop! An UWP line would be so cool... now, do we know anyone who actually knows about producing clothes or accessories? o_0

You look perfect in this pair of jeans. I also love the orange blouse and sparkly pumps. This is something I would totally copy.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

These look fantastic on you, Rae. What a wonderful story. I think this could be helpful to many members. I'm curious about how you decided precisely what you wanted and what would look good. Part of the reason these are so great, I suspect, is that you had a very clear idea of what your fit issues are/were and what you wanted.

LOVE the hardware and agree the UWP would be just the right touch!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

I'm so glad that you are happy! The jeans look GREAT!

  • Claudia replied 11 years ago

Very interesting to read about. Thanks for the great photos, too. These look really perfect on you.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

These jeans look utterly AMAZING on you Rae! I'm so, so glad they turned out for you. And I think you deserve alot of credit for being clear and consistent with your instructions. Big kudos to Get Wear for their customer service and dedication to your product!

I'm really glad they worked out for you. They look great on you!

  • replied 11 years ago

I must look into this. I would love to get a super faded straight leg jean, in my hard to find length. The jeans look awesome!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Thanks for looking, everyone! I have to admit, I was really, really afraid this experiment would not work out. Mildly relieved that no one has yet told me to check my eyes for wishful thinking disease. ;)

As for my denim knowledge... well, maybe I do know a little bit more than the average person, since I used to sew my own jeans and manage to touch and fondle a variety of brands in my bargain travels. At the end of the day, though, if you have a pair of jeans - or a few pairs of jeans - that you can reference, it will help a lot. I think my pictures and diagrams possibly saved the day through a show-not-tell strategy. Even if you put on a pair of jeans that you aren't 100% happy with, you can send them a picture pointing out what you'd like to change.

Zap, if you decide to go for it and need any help communicating with them, let me know. I hope you find your jeans, which ever way you go about it. :)

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

Oh, wow! They look great now that the little issues have been sorted out. Glad to hear that the experience was positive too. I agree that they need a UWP logo!

I forget - did you get the 100% cotton denim option? What is the weight of the fabric like? I am looking for something really specific that I can't seem to find - lightweight, faded 100% cotton slightly slouchy straight or boot leg jeans for summer. Wondering if this company has a fabric that would work...

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Diana, mine have spandex. I can't tell from the design page what the different blends are, but if you browse the different pre-designes styles, it shows the fabric content on there. For example:
    http://getwear.com/women/8/

Or, I guess it would be easier to email the company and ask. It's definitely a problem that the fabric content isn't on the design page.

Rae these turned out super awesome!! Digging that button fly. Thanks for the detailed review of the process and communication, I'm going to bookmark for when I need to get my favorite black skinnies replaced.

Also, I have to say I'm excited to see those sweet gold pumps again, I have missed them so :D

  • Jewell replied 11 years ago

Those jeans are PERFECT! And I really enjoyed your thorough review.

Can't wait to see the UWP logo, what a cool idea!!

  • san replied 11 years ago

Rae thankyou for sharing this experience with us. I am definately going to order from getwear because I find it so hard to find good fitting jeans. Yours look great and what a difference a custom fit makes. Good job!

  • replied 11 years ago

Gasping at the fabness! And those sparkly pumps?!! I never knew!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Edit above: As the fabric softened up, I could better notice extra creasing in the crotch. I measured and the rise is still 8" - 1" higher than I'd asked for. I have written the company on this and am awaiting reply.
