Foot and Head Trauma in Short Shorts

I am still very much in shock, so I can't say how I feel, good or bad about the hair.

Right before I left, I was putting on my cognac steampunk boots, around which I'd designed this entire outfit, and the zipper on the right boot separated. I was *crushed* but had no time for any of that, because I had to get to my hair appointment.

I had a good feeling about my stylist right away - a woman from Georgia (Europe), who instantly knew I was Eastern European and Asian, although not the exact nationalities. I showed her my pictures, and she said she understood but that... well her exact words were, "I'm not going to bullshit around and say I can keep the length." Imagine that in an adorable accent. I told her I was afraid, but I knew she had cut a couple other girls' hair in the place, and based on their fabulosity, I still felt good about moving forward.

The major issue is that my last cut was super round and she had to sort of fight against that cut. I knew this was an issue but I felt I could either grow out a textured cut or a heavy one and went in favor of the texture. She says this cut will grow into the shape that I want, and I think I even believe her.

I definitely do like the movement and texture, and I like where she directed the volume. What do you think? I have not played with it at home at all yet.

ETA: Coming back to share good news! With a little patience and stubbornness, I was able to set my boot zipper back on track! Whew... lowering panic level to DEFCON 2. :)

I think the new cut is STUNNING on you! LOVE it!!!!

Sorry about the boot zipper though.

    ETA: super model stunning.

  • annagybe replied 11 years ago

    Haircut totally works.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

KILLER new do! I love it even more than the last cut. And it will absolutely grow into the cut you're after too.

    Sorry about the boots :(

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Thanks so much, ladies. I am still feeling vaguely nauseous about it, but your kind opinions are helping.

  • Kristin SF replied 11 years ago

I also love it more than the last cut!! I think the last cut was the psychological prep you needed for this cut.

(I'm still testing the waters with my first haircut, similar to your last one, and finding that the annoying flip it does at the ends is making me itch to get it all chopped off. This is good inspiration for me.)

    Enjoy it, you look terrific!!

  • DonnaF replied 11 years ago

Your old cut was very cute, but this one most definitely looks like it is going in the direction you had in mind, and cute along the way, too! Congrats!

  • Caro in Oz replied 11 years ago

Honestly I LOVE it. You look so chic & funky at the same time.
I don't know if this helps but sometimes it does take 2 cuts to get your hair the exact shape you want, I love that she told you that - some of them don't which is silly imo.

  • biscuitsmom replied 11 years ago

LOVE the new cut!! You always look beautiful, but this really shows off your pretty face :) Sorry about your boots :( Can you get it fixed, Im hoping?

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Rae, what is it about the cut that is causing the trauma?

  • rae replied 11 years ago

OMG!!! This cut is stunning on you Rae!

  • Mochi replied 11 years ago

I also like this haircut infinitely more than the last one--which I liked quite a lot. Looks like you're in a good place with your hair now.

Sorry about the boots. ETA: oh, you fixed them, yay!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Angie, it's just that it *feels* so short! Looking at the pics, it is not that different from the last cut, but with the razoring I saw so. much. hair. com flying off. It was a super weird sensation for someone who has had long hair all her life and even did her own trims for 10 years.

I have played a little bit with my flat iron here, and I'm liking the cut more and more. Even if I go long again, I think I will stick with this stylist. The receptionist had great texture and movement in her long hair, and that cut was by my gal.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

You look great, Rae. Love the new 'do and am glad that you were able to fix your boots!

  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago

I love this, Rae, even the length, which is very flattering to your face shape. I think it'll be much easier to style in the mornings, too.

Now.....to go blow dry my annoying Mary Tyler Moore hair. After the holidays, I'm going to tackle the hair beast myself. No steampunk for me, though. I'm the only one over 20 in my set in colored denim. Baby steps.

  • Atlantia replied 11 years ago

    Love it.
Sometimes the chop causes tears and nausea and anxiety. It will pass once you realize how completely phenomenal you look!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Ah! I get it. Totally understandable. But you're already working with the length and appreciating it! You are going to *love* this choppy cut. That's a promise. I give it a fortnight :)

  • Janet replied 11 years ago

Rae, I think it looks amazing! Even better than the last cut.

  • pil replied 11 years ago

Rae, I LOVE this cut on you! Won't it be more receptive to product and roughing up now too?

  • JulieJohn replied 11 years ago

It looks even cuter than the first one, and I didn't think that was possible! I am picturing Natasha from the old Bullwinkle cartoons saying, "Don't vorry, ven I am finished vith you, you vill look PERFEKT!" And she was right.

  • Raisin replied 11 years ago

I actually love this much more than the last cut, and that one was great too! You have the face for a short cut, and this one is much edgier, whereas the last one was a bit cuter. Fabulous! I think you should keep it like this! Glad to hear you boot zipper got fixed.

  • replied 11 years ago

YES! I like it even more then before and it seems to fit more with your style.

  • replied 11 years ago

I liked your last cut, but I LOVE this one. Give it a few days to settle and you'll be happy with it. Now you have found someone good, you can tinker and get it to how you want!

  • Kat replied 11 years ago

You looked very good in your last cut, but you look great and like YOU in this one which is infinitely better. In the first pic, you look like you think so too :)
I always find the first shampoo after a cut like that tough (running hands through hair to rinse and finding less than usual) once that is done, then you are on your way to loving this I predict.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Coming back just to say I think this haircut is going to ramp up your overall style even higher than it already is - and that's saying something 'cause your style is AMAZING!!!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 11 years ago

Love, love, love this hair style on you! Length and all. To me, it goes with your style even more than your long hair did. I predict you'll have people stopping to compliment you on it.

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

Rae, this is fabulousness! I showed my hairdresser and she thought it was a great cut too. We talked about how I first chopped my hair and donated when I turned 40, and how it took several cuts to get the shorter version right. Long hair kind of goes into shock at being short, and needs to adjust just like our eyes do. This is a big step toward what you want for sure, and I think for many it would BE the right cut - but only you know that!

  • Sarah A replied 11 years ago

Dig the cut! Yippee for boot repairs too!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

FanTAStic, Rae!! It is even better than the last one. WHOOT! And you have a stylist you can trust. This is great news. Glad you decided to put your money there.

So sorry about the boots - are they reparable?

ETA - I came back to this page after being away for a few hours and had missed the follow up comment - glad the boots are okay!

  • RunnerChick replied 11 years ago

This is amazeballs! Totally. This looks wonderful now AND it is going to grow into the cut you want. I speak as one who has (a) sort of similar kind of Asian hair that you and Una have; and (b) a razored cut. Una is exactly right! (Una, I too cut my hair when I turned 40!). I find that all hair, but especially long hair, needs a few days to settle down into the cut. I won't be surprised if you really love the cut in a few days.

  • Aida replied 11 years ago

LOVE it!! As someone who adores feathered ends but can't actually sport them, I have serious feathered end envy. I have to say this stylist did a brilliant BRILLIANT job on yours. Our hair wax should be super fun to play with with this new 'do. And it will certainly grow into the cut you were picturing (based off all your hair pins on Pinterest), probably by two weeks. LOVE :D :D Now get some emerald dip-dyed ends so I can enjoy those, too ^^

  • rae replied 11 years ago

I'm glad the response has been so positive! I agree with the comments about the hair needing time to recover - it is in as much shock as I am, probably. Looking forward to seeing how it settles in. Particularly looking forward to it growing out, but that is more because at this length it reminds me of my mom.

  • amiable replied 11 years ago

I loved the last one, and this one is so much better. Very very you. I'm always shocked when I get a new haircut too. But after a couple of days and a good cry over all the hair I lost, then I love it. Happens almost every time for me.

  • Sveta replied 11 years ago

Love the hair, more that the previous one! It does take time to adjust to having shorter hair.
As for the amount of hair which came off - I have a pixie cut and you should see the amount of hair my stylist sweeps out after my job...unbelievable!
Hooray for the zipper success story!

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

Your hair looks FANTASTIC! AMAZING! I also love your outfit. And your stylist sounds like a keeper. I think you are just in shock, I can't imagine you won't be loving this very soon.

  • cheryl replied 11 years ago

I like this one better than the last one too. You look fantastic!

  • Alecia replied 11 years ago

Joining the gushing! I love it. It frames your face beautifully. And it has movement, which your long hair, while beautiful, didn't. It's like adding texture to an outfit. It takes things up a notch.

  • Katiepea replied 11 years ago

Oh my goodness, you look *beautiful* and oh, so stylish! I hope you are absolutely loving your new hair.

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

This is a huge change! But I love it. It's so chic. I wish I could pull off a shorter cut.

  • lyn67 replied 11 years ago

Oh, and another fabulous cut today, among Una's:-)). It so worth comming here to see such beautiful ladies! The new cut suit you so well Rae, but I can totally relate to your panic. I ALWAYS panic at the hairdresser:-(( NO MATTER WHAT.
Love your outfit today, & glad boots are OK.

  • replied 11 years ago

    It looks AMAZING!
Yes, Una is right, long hair goes into shock once you cut it. You'll see this one will keep on getting better and better!

  • Scarlet replied 11 years ago

Logging in to say AMAZING!!! I think she did an awesome job!

  • Isabel replied 11 years ago

I love runnerchick's "amazeballs". It is soooooo sophisticated, I love it.

I am happy to hear about your boots too. ( My heart sank at the title of the post, I thought that you had another car accident..wooooo. )

  • Nadya replied 11 years ago

edgy, choppy fabulous haircut! I think it's going to make you try outfits you never would have ...... I hope you grow to love it!

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

You found a cool, clever hairdresser who gave you a VERY COOL cut! Stick with her, Rae! This looks great, and she even sounds like she knows exactly what you're after.

Seconding all comments on letting long hair alone for a week to get adjusted to its new length and weight. It's going to suddenly do things it never did before.

  • Marley replied 11 years ago

I logged on tonight (I've been traveling the last 2 days) just to see if you had posted a pic of your new haircut - and Rae, this is even more FAB than I ever imagined! I LOVE it - and I think you will love it too, once you get used to it. Its PERFECT!

  • cciele replied 11 years ago

Just popped in to say AWESOME! I think this cut will turn out a lot more like what you have in mind.

I totally empathize with you, BTW. I was in a bit of a shock after I had my hair chopped recently, and then after I washed it and played with it I felt better.

  • Vix replied 11 years ago

    Hi Rae --

I think this cut is both very flattering on you and "matches" your style better than the last (which I also liked).

Hope you adjust to the shortness, but if you don't then as you say you've got a cutter who will likely help you get a similar effect with longer hair.

    Enjoy!

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

OMG Rae! Hadn't seen this before now! You look SUPER good with this haircut. Much better than the previous one. So much style and personality. It's always a shock to go from long to short, but believe me, this is so cool, much cooler than long hair!

Sorry about your boots... :-( what a bad timing too.

Looking forward for more pics from you in your dazzling do.
