Jagged Little (red and black) Pill, Indeed

Not exactly inspired by the Alanis album cover (today was my store's Holiday Party, so dressing for that took first priority), but the whole outfit is a jagged pill for me to swallow. To be succinct: I hated it.

  • This B44 skirt looked so good when I tried it on but it rides up all the livelong day - even without hose! Ack!
  • This jacket looked charmingly boxy in the mirror, but seeing it in this photo, I think it just looks BIG. Must investigate further... I can maybe still get the right size. I think the main thing is that the sleeves are baggy.
  • These tights were too hot for the event, and I had to strip them off before the party started.
  • I honestly couldn't find my Pleione hi-low racerback tank, which I would have much preferred.
  • And yes, here I am wearing red and black after that whole discussion on Dr. Who. And I didn't feel any better about it... really should have worn a different color on bottom. In theory, I had hoped that the "dirty" black wash on top of the red would help things out.
  • Even the photo looks awkward and blurry.
Sigh. Mama told me there'd be days like this.

Any suggestions on if I should go 1 size down on the jacket or 2? I bought this one based on measurements, but if I go by the size chart I should get XS. It's a really stretchy denim.

Mmmm ........ it doesn't look half as bad as you think it does!  I think it looks fantastic!  But I do understand how certain things affect the way we feel about our outfit.

I like the color combo.  The jacket doesn't look overly big, although a size smaller might give you the perfect Rae look :)  With your edgy haircut and style you could rock a sack if you wished!

The skirt DOES look great - what a shame it won't sit still!
I like the style of the jacket, but I agree that the sleeves are too baggy and are bunching on your upper arm. It would be worth trying a size down. My only concern about going down two sizes would be that the shoulders might then be too tight.
I missed the Dr Who discussion, but I think you look fab in red and black.

I'm sorry to hear you felt like that about this outfit Rae, as really  it is much better than expected after reading it all. Ha, about the swallowing the jagged pill with it:-(. Looking at this, I  may even have to withdraw my words about not liking reds and blacks together. I now understand it's all in the proportions, textures and hues. Believe me, your black column is the best background for that moto, so nothing wrong with this outfit, at all!

You look great, but that's not the same as feeling great.

Rae, I looked at the photo before reading your text, and my first reaction was OMG I LOVE that moto colour on you. It looks fantastic! (What brand is the jacket?) WRT size, I didn't notice it as too big but if I could see you in the XS to compare the two it would help to judge. But looking at where the shoulders hit it is not obviously too big is it?

Love that jacket. I think a size smaller would be a better fit. Great skirt, love the boots..... Its too bad the skirt wont behave.

I think I would try the size smaller in the jacket, although I think this size looks fine and "charmingly boxy."
And being a skirt lover, I HATE IT when they ride up. No, no, no....even without hose? That's too bad, it's such a pretty skirt.

Rae - I am sorry you were so uncomfortable.  I can only tell you from the photo you looked gorgeous.  I bought a BCBG tube skirt which I adored right up until the time I wore it.  It kept migrating.  So one and done, out it went.  There is nothing worse than being uncomfortable so no matter how great it looks on just not worth it.  I actually like the size of the moto.  I thought the relaxed vibe was deliberate until I read your post.  I also like relaxed over more body con look.  I'll be interested to see if Angie chimes in on this.  But not matter what any one says, the only thing that mattesr is how you feel.  If the jacket feels too big and boxy then follow your gut and try the xs.  But please realize, anyone looking at you thought you looked chic, stylish, and elegant.  Sorry it did not feel that way!!

I understand the discomfort of clothes that just end up not working -- but you seriously look fantastic! I like the red and black quite a bit. I'm no expert on jacket fit and will leave that to others, but on first glance, it doesn't strike me as ill-fitting.

That sucks that you felt uncomfortable. You don't look it! I think the jacket looks good but since it is stretchy, might be worth investigating a smaller size.

The outfit looks fantastic Rae but I know that how an outfit feels and behaves on makes a huge impact on whether or not we personally like an outfit. Skirts riding up and sliding around drives me nuts so I totally relate to your frustration. Would a short slip help at all?

The jacket doesn't look too big but it's hard to tell from the pic with the sleeves scrunched, etc. If you are able to try a size smaller it might be worth it just to see.

Thank you for commiserating with me, ladies. I think the feel was the main factor here... bunching of the skirt and bunching in the arms. O_O As for the colors, I think the light grays in the skirt stood out more IRL. I think I would still use a black top with the jacket as long as the bottom was gray or navy.

Shannon, the darn skirt has a slip built in! I cannot wrap my head around it. Just bad design, I guess. It just creeps up my thighs and bunches. Out it'll go, I guess.

MFF, it's a Guess jacket! I ordered the XS to check out, because I really do like it. *crossing fingers*

I agree with your mirror that the jacket looks charmingly boxy. That said, I'm a proponent of ordering multiple sizes to compare so you don't have to wonder.
Sorry you were uncomfortable - I can totally relate to the skirt issues. Looking in the mirror and even walking around the house sometimes doesn't bring out issues that arise when actually putting an item through it's paces for a whole day. You look terrific, though!

I really like the look on you but the skirt would be out of my closet with the riding up issue.
