My favorite way to roll denim jacket sleeves

I love the look of rolled up sleeves on a denim jacket - but I'm often very bothered by the bulk it creates. It seems like the roll usually squeezes my arms super tight or becomes a lump so big I can hardly put my arms down at my sides (kind of like that puffer coat scene from A Christmas Story).

I happened upon this trick when I ordered a red utility jacket from Abercrombie & Fitch and the item arrived with sleeves pre rolled. It cuts down on bulk considerably by removing the thick cuff and metal button from the roll equation - and provides the added benefit of leaving all that snazzy cuff detail exposed for all to see. I've since converted and never looked back!

1) Start with the sleeve turned completely down.

2) Turn the bottom of the sleeve inside out and pull cuff up on arm until the inner cuff seam (that part where the cuff ends and "normal" sleeve begins) is about a "roll width" higher than your desired sleeve length.

3) Go back down to the part of the sleeve closest to your wrist -- this will now be a double layer of fabric. Roll the doubled fabric up toward the sleeve cuff.

4) Stop rolling when your roll *just* overlaps the inner seam of your cuff, and arrange cuff to your liking.

5) Rock & Roll! With a little more exposed surface area than you had before. :)

Thanks Rae! I just received a new denim jacket by post today, so perfect timing to try this.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

ramrrr, I have not tried it on blazers, but that is a great idea! I will experiment and see what I can do.

I will try this with a blazer tomorrow - looks like it could work!

  • harmonica replied 11 years ago

Thanks Rae! I'll try this next time I'll be wearing my denim jacket :-)

Thanks Rae, I just tried to roll them like you showed but felt them widening my upper arms a bit more than I liked, but then I just turned the original cufs partially back down(if that makes sense) and love it!:-))
Particullary usefull if the original roll is a bit wearry already, as for ex. I always rolled my cufs on my white denim jacket simply, no fuss, from cufs to the elbow, but now with this new one method the last layer of the fabric shown is changed, so-this can be crisp as new again! thanks so much! I always learn something here:-).

Thanks Rae, a timely tip that will allow the blood in my arms to circulate now when I roll my cuffs.

  • Claudia replied 11 years ago

    Great, thanks so much!

I'm wishing my new denim jacket would hurry up and arrive so that I can try this. Great! Thank you Rae.

Rae great (and useful) tutorial. Thank you. I am really keen to see if this works on tailored jackets too. Im off to find out:)

  • Traci replied 11 years ago

Thanks, Rae! I had a similar revelation when I saw this picture of Angie. It doesn't stay put as well as your way probably does, but I like the more relaxed vibe it gave me instead of donut rolls of denim on my forearm. I'll give your trick a try next!

  • sarah replied 11 years ago

Hah - yes, that's how Angie does it, too, and I started doing that awhile back with my denims and button downs. thanks!

  • Kristin L replied 11 years ago

    Thanks for the tip!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Fantastic! I need this with my newly thrifted white denim jacket - thanks for sharing Rae!

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

    Thanks Rae! This is great.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Traci, I love that pic of Angie's jacket, too! I have never had much luck with scrunching, though - I always have to pin up the scrunch to make it stay.

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

Thanks, Rae! I think this is similar to what AJ suggested for my jacket last week, and it's really helpful to have the visuals. I think people seemed to like my triple rolled sleeves best but they were SO bulky and uncomfortable that I couldn't stand it and had to take them out, so I will try this next time.

Re: scrunch, I use the hair elastic trick that I learned here, but it makes it kind of hard to take the jacket on and off.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Wow, FAB tutorial, Rae! Thank you! This is really a necessity for me, because I pretty much have to roll all my denim jackets unless they come with 3/4 length sleeves.

  • rute replied 11 years ago

    cute! I must try that!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Nice! Looks fab and thanks for sharing.

I roll mine an entirely different way because I like to keep the same side of the fabrication showing. More on that later this week.

Perfect! I call that the J Crew roll. One of the SAs there showed it to me several years ago and she called it that. It works brilliantly to give you a clean, non-bulky roll. I'd never have thought to post on it. You are a gem, Rae!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Yay! I'm excited to learn a new way to roll, Angie! I feel like the different techniques create totally different looks for the jackets.

Diana, I must buy the wrong hair ties; they either cut off my blood flow or aren't tight enough to hold a sleeve tight to my forearm. Hmmm...

    great tips, looks neater too

  • Lisa replied 11 years ago

    Great tip!

  • RandomThoughts (Andrea) replied 11 years ago

That's how we rolled sleeves on our BDUs in the Army. Why did I never think to do that with my denim? Brilliant!

  • nancylee replied 11 years ago

This is so helpful, Rae! Thanks for sharing.

  • replied 11 years ago

Thanks for the tip! I also can't wait to read Angie's method.

I tried this with my denim jackets and the slit was problematic. The roll just didn't capture the slit well enough and just looked sloppy on the back. It looked fine from the front. What do the backs of your cuffs look like when rolled this way?

  • replied 11 years ago

Oh, that's great! I'll have to try that. My faded jacket is tight enough to do the yank and scrunch, but your way is a bit neater. I love all the emphasis sleeves are getting in fashion lately. It's fun to style them different ways!
