Playing Koi

Not traditionally the best outfit photos, but we didn't think about it while out relaxing yesterday. However, it tickles me to see myself in my cashmere, Burberry, Ugg Collection (investment) boots, and ladylike bag while out... squatting in the mud, feeding fish.

Ok, so the koi pond was in a very nice, clean, stylized Japanese Garden, but still: there was a time when wearing my precious items on a "regular" day out would be unheard of - let alone getting them near water and dirt. Thankfully, Angie has taught us that things can be precious to me without being too precious for daily life.

PS: those Koi are sooooo much fun - they eat right out of your hands. Sometimes I don't know how humans thrived as they have - what other breed of monkey becomes giddy feeding smaller animals? We're so weird!

    Love everything about this!

The other day I added up the theoretical cost of an outfit I was wearing and realized it was more than I'd ever thought I'd spend (even with consignment and thrifting) - but I felt so GREAT!  I think it was the leather leggings/Joie tunic/Ugg Cortonas...

Great way to illustrate Angie's advice to "just wear it" ~~

Hooray for wearing the 'good' stuff!!  Love the real life pics, too.

Just wanted to add with regard to what I said about cost - it really had nothing to do with expense in itself but more with the fact that I was able to buy and wear EXACTLY what I wanted.  In the past I would have thrifted substitutes and always been mildly bothered by some missing element.  Less can be more.

Glad you're bringing your best clothes into your real life.  There is something beyond "good style" in this -- it's like we embrace our own lives more fully, and appreciate everyday activities more than before.

Between your FAB flea market dollar finds and your eBay scores, you are cultivating a yummy wardrobe! That trench is delish! Nicely styled.

Looks great to see you using your wardrobe! Hooray!

Now THAT'S to to wear our clothes Rae! We need to live in them and enjoy life's experiences regardless of how much they cost. Gorgeous!

You had me fooled.  From the title I was expecting to see a google image search with Koi!   You look great and obviously the fish think so too.  ;)

You mean our wardrobes don't exist to make our closets happy?I'm spending more and actually wearing it too, what a concept. Hooray for wear your beautiful clothes. YLF.

I like these pics a lot. You, your clothes, the koi, and Japanese gardens are all elegant and classy, and it's interesting to see an outfit "at work" as opposed to a stationery pose.

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

YLF. Maybe that is why we have survived by feeding smaller creatures :)

You look so good! It's inspiring to see you loving and living your style so fully. And koi, aren't they the best?

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

Wow, I'm glad your clothes are with you on all sorts of adventures, Rae! I had this kind of a moment the other day too - adding up all the pieces of my outfit - after I had cleaned out a puke basin (not in my job description, but hey, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do).

  • Jjsloane replied 10 years ago

Yay for wearing it not putting it under the proverbial plastic sofa cover!

I maiden voyaged my Burberry apple picking and am glad I did (although I was palpitating that something MIGHT happen and DH warned me about Apple goo)

    Beautiful Koi and Beautiful Rae.

Oh, I FINALLY got the koi pun!~ I'm a little slow.

This outfit is crazy gorgeous. I need a full body picture. I loved you realization. I used to be so proud when my entire outfit was only five or six dollars, lol! Recently I added up what I had on and nearly passed out. I loved everything I was wearing though, and will have it for a long time. I don't think I've kept a single "dollar" item.

  • Shirley replied 10 years ago

Yes!   finally get over that "save for XXX occasion" that never came.  Even suede footwear.  Thanks for sharing.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

The koi are great accessories for fab you!

  • rae replied 10 years ago

Thanks so much, ladies! I wish I had a full body shot, but it's not too creative an outfit in reality - just all black covering the citron sweater.

Una and Claire, I am glad you know where I am coming from! I used to feel like I was being wasteful if I shopped at a full-priced retail store... like if I could find a substitute for a dollar, then it was somehow my duty to do so. But many of those things were just that: substitutes. Very rarely the perfect thing with the perfect function. I DO have many beloved dollar gems, but the bulk turned out to be sartorial wheel-spinning or experimentation.

Lyn, now that is putting an outfit through its paces!

Jeanne, I would have been afraid of apple goo, too. Or resin... what if a big glop of resin fossilized my trench?? lol But you know... it's nice to like something enough to worry about its safety. ;)

And that right there is Rae LIVING Fab.

I was just battling with my head if I should wear *expensive and precious to me* Steve Madden stilletos for this holiday in my usually mucky native country for fear of *spoiling* them. I think you just helped me decide :)

Thanks Rae and you look wonderful! The fishes seem to like you too :)
