Scottvest Women's Trench Fashion Review - Long & Pic Heavy

Someone, get the smelling salts ready! I am truly excited about this trench - not just from the standpoint of a gal who loves a good gadget and gimmick, but also from the standpoint of an increasingly picky Youlookfab protege. Rather than a usual keep/return, I thought I'd do a proper review in case anyone is considering this for the future.

I'm crushing on the color *hard.* Not quite orange, not quite red, and not quite brown, yet is has the qualities of all three for me. It's saturated and unique.

The fabric is 100% polyester, but it's nice and matte and looks almost like cotton. Definitely not slicker or rip-stop material. It's soft to the touch, has a nice drape, and resists wrinkles - you know how I hate wrinkles. Construction is solid and clean. From a fashion standpoint, I wish the buckles on the waist and sleeve belts had been black to match the buttons, but it doesn't bother me. The buttons and buckles could also have been a weightier material - however, the buttons are on par with the $200 trench I tried from Madewell, so this could just be the reality of the price point. Also, I imagine Scottvest might have wanted to keep the trench light, as they specialize in travelwear. The trench is fully lined in a nice, silky fabric - Zapotee is right: that feels much better over clothes than cotton lining.

Fit-wise, I was pleasantly surprised. I kept my expectations low at first, because the trench does not come in size XS and does not come in knee-length. I was afraid the shoulder seams would sag off my frame and that the hem would not comfortably cover my rear and the sleeves would be ridiculously wide and baggy. In reality, though, the fit is very similar to the Madewell trench of the same size. The shoulders and sleeves are maybe a bit wider, but the drape helps that a lot IMO. The drape also saves the day when tying the belt behind the back to wear the trench open - I can create a much slimmer silhouette with the Scottvest trench. From the picture, I also feared that the trench would be drop-waisted, but it seems to work just fine at my natural waist.

The fun part? 18 crazy pockets grace the coat's lining - enough to stuff in all your travel essentials and then some. You can thread your mp3 and phone headphones/earpieces *through* the lining (yep, no ripping of cords when you stuff your arms in in a hurry); you can clip your keys to the included bungee cord in an outer pocket (magnetized, which helps keep a clean line and add security); you can clean off your glasses with the attached glasses cloth in an inner pocket.

Picture 10 shows the coat loaded up with more than I'd ever use: an old-school, single-use film camera; oversized sunglasses; large wallet; cellphone; passport. There is a decently sized bulge that you can see on the left side of the picture, near my waist. Those are my shades - but as I said, they are oversized. One drawback is that the glasses are placed so near the waist that you may have to take care not to crush them in a fit of frenzied belting. On the other hand, the indent of the waist helps disguise the bulge of the glasses. It is a trade-off.

Finally, pictures 11-12 are side-by-side comparisons of the Scottvest trench and the Madewell trench.

I have not worn this coat outside yet, but I can already tell it is warmer than the other (no shock with the polyester). I held the end of the belt under the faucet, and the water rolled right off. Assuming the forum let's me keep it, I will have to do a follow-up on the breathability of the material.

So... what do you say? I'm leaning very heavily towards keeping this, unless there is a very good argument against it.

Rachel you are so cute I can hardly stand it! What a great review of this fabulous coat! The color is incredible on you, far superior to the *other* coat in 11/12, IMHO. I share your love of practical pockets and you had me in stitches about crushing your sunglasses in a "frenzied fit of belting", lol! I suppose this coat also has a zip out extension that turns it into a sleeping bag for two. KEEP. A little acrylic craft paint carefully applied will turn those buckles black if you're feeling brave. Just sayin'. I love it!

    Thumbs up! Loooove the color!

Wow Rae - it looks like me like your diligence has paid off BIG TIME! Good points include:

    - the colour: absolutely gorgeous on you. I like the colour of the Madewell trench too, but it's no comparison to the saturated dark red of this one
    - the fit: perfect to my eye. Not too big but enough room to layer over a blazer if need be
    - lining: how lovely to have a silkier lining
    - pockets: not only a vast number of pockets to carry all your stuff, especially important when traveling, but well placed and obvious well stitched so that they don't add any bulk or puckering to the jacket

I think this is the keeper! And frankly...your smile in these photos says it all!

Love it! The fit and colour are fantastic on you! And it holds so much stuff that you're going to have keep a list of which pocket contains what :)

  • Meredith1953 replied 12 years ago

    Rae,
This is a total keeper. You look so lovely in it! The fit is excellent and that color is fabulous on you!

  • Isis replied 12 years ago

You had me at 18 pockets......but it also looks great! Love the color! Love the fit! Keep!

  • rae replied 12 years ago

Claire, who hasn't had a fit of frenzied belting at some point in their life? ;) I'm afraid to attack this with paint... but maybe a little Sharpie action?

Challene, the pockets actually each have a little pictures of what they suggest you keep inside. I guess it would be weird to have to squint at your own coat lining while you were wearing it, though... lol.

A huge keep from me :) I do have a slight (very marginal) preference for the Madewell in terms of fit, but the functionality of the Scottvest won me over.

Regarding the lining, I'm glad the time and money I've spent making the wrong purchases, is helping someone. Great news!

  • Suz replied 12 years ago

Rae, you are such a star! This is a fabulous review, and as far as I'm concerned, the company ought to give you the coat for free you are such a great advertisement for it!

You are so right of course. Who hasn't had a fit of frenzied belting?! Isn't that what trench coats are FOR? You've just had a fight with the man, or the man has just called and asked you to meet him at the station platform, or you and the man are standing kissing on the station platform and they announce your train and announce your train and announce LAST CALL for your train....

I now want a Scottvest trench for myself, you are such a great saleswoman. This looks PERFECT for your trip and well beyond.

  • Jem replied 12 years ago

I LOVE the color of it! And, the all pockets are way too fun and useful. A big keep from me!

  • Diana replied 12 years ago

Love this! I think the fit is fantastic, much better than the Madewell trench in my opinion. I think I may have been alone in not liking how wide the Madewell looked when it was open, but this one drapes much more flatteringly and looks much sleeker. I prefer the color too. And the pockets are awesome.

I think you will always have a trade-off between waterproofness and breathability, but on the other hand you also don't have to worry about that horrid cold, damp coat feeling when it rains.

  • Freckles replied 12 years ago

This is absolutely perfect for your trip and well afterward I would think.

    Yes, yes, yes Rae...

  • fern replied 12 years ago

Yay! I much prefer the color & fit of this one. Much much.
Great review - I'm happy you found your trench!

  • Deborah replied 12 years ago

Rae I do feel the fit of the Madewell trench is slightly better but I think the Scottvest is superior due to it meeting all your other requirements. And the color is incredible on you!

  • rae replied 12 years ago

For those who prefer the fit of the Madewell, can I ask what it is that looks better to you? To my untrained (at least re: trenches) eye, they look much the same.

  • Mo replied 12 years ago

To me, the Madewell looks slimmer through the torso, while the other is a bit more of a paper bag waist effect. I prefer the Madewell fit myself, but it's hard to argue with all those pockets!

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

I love that paprika colour on you, Rae!

Do agree with Debs that the Madewell trench has a better fit. A slightly better length, slimmer and shorter sleeves, and an overall more streamlined silhouette.

That being said, your heart is with the paprika so go with that one :)

  • rae replied 12 years ago

Ah, I do agree that a longer length and slimmer sleeves would be ideal. Mo, I see what you mean about the torso, too. In a perfect world, I would combine the two!

The one thing that I can't seem to get over about the Madewell is how much it bunches and crinkles in the back. The Scottvest does this, too - but it does it less and, because the material is softer, I don't *feel* any bulk or bunching when I move around in the trench. Does that make sense?

As long as the fit of the Scottvest is still good, and I think y'all would have told me if it wasn't. Looking at the pics, I think I will wear it with the belt sitting lower, showing the middle row of buttons like in 3, 4, and 5.

  • Kirti replied 12 years ago

Wow look at how the Paprika colour lights up your face! It is a keeper for sure :)

  • ManidipaM replied 12 years ago

Rae, how FANTABULOUS! Hold on to your (red) coat!

  • replied 12 years ago

This trehnch is s adorable. And for travel, those crazy pockets will come in very handy. So glad for you!

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

You sound like you're in trench coat love :)! It will be perfect for your trip.

  • Isabel replied 12 years ago

LOVE !!!! I just love the color : saffron/paprika. This may be the ONE.

  • Angie replied 12 years ago

You have my huge paprika blessing :)

    (FWIW!)

  • dottie replied 12 years ago

That trench is brilliant! I went over to the Scottevest site to check out the specs, and it is amazing! The colour looks fantastic on you. Thanks for the detailed review!

  • Parsley replied 12 years ago
