Styled by Zap (a.k.a shameless copycatting)

So not only did I straight-up carbon copy two(!) Zap items from Shoptoberfest (the jacket she wore and the boots she inherited at the swap), but I also followed her brilliant advice to wear the two together. Instant understated luxury, and with many happy memories built in. <3 <3 <3

I chose a super simple black skinny and white tee, which I liked best for a few reasons:

  • a white tee and black jeans both feel laid back
  • the simplest of neutrals fall in line with my 2014 goal of being less busy with my outfits. The jacket and booties can be the stars.
  • the b/w combo feels both current and progressive since it looks like it will still be around for Spring.
My only accessories today were my wedding rings, rhinestone studs, and my uber dainty snake necklace.

After about 20 years of obsessively filling all my belt loops, I am finding I like the belt-less look more and more. Maybe it's because semi-tucking effectively hides the belt loops, or maybe less leather seems softer. Not sure, but after so long it's fun to switch it up.

I'm also surprising myself by being much more into dainty jewelry lately. For a few years, I thought I was completely over delicate chains and worried that I would never be able to pull off such wispy things on my solid frame. But now the barely-there sparkle seems like the perfect... "understatement jewelry."

How do you feel about teensy chains? Is the rest of the world still on Team Statement Necklace? I am seeing mostly chunky collars and pendants, and there are a few delicate long chains, but those seem to be meant for layering.

I adore this, Rae, and wish I could shamelessly copycat it as well (but I lack the jacket, boots, and bag, sadly)!  I've been alternating between a couple of dainty necklaces as everyday pieces myself.  I'm kind of over statement necklaces, except for special occasions, when I like to pile on the bling.  One of my necklaces has three tiny rough silver and gold nuggets on a delicate chain, and the other is a very dainty silver skull necklace.  I love the juxtaposition in that one--dainty and tough all at once.  Your snake one is similar in feel.

  • rae replied 10 years ago

Ooh, a dainty skull necklace sounds amazing! Off to google and try to Pin some as gift ideas. :D

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

We'll of course this is fab - Zap is the master of elegant luxury. Love that jacket!

I can't do delicate jewelry - for me it is the accessory equivalent of dainty heels. I do enjoy it on others! But I do have a thin silver chain and little gold flip-flop from Hawaii that means a lot to me because it is from my favorite place in the world.

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

Ooh, very nice, understated neutrals with a pop of print!

I never really stopped wearing my delicate chains, although I wear less jewelry in general these days than I did a couple of years ago. I can't really pull off most of the true statement necklaces. Angie has confirmed this. My neck and chest are too short, there's really nowhere to put a big bib necklace on me!

  • Jewell replied 10 years ago

    Yep...understated luxury! I love it!

I have only one dainty necklace- silver with my initial. I adore it, and have had a dainty gold chain on my wish list for at least a year. It's a refreshing change from all the in-your-face statement pieces that seem to be everywhere.

Love this laid back look, gorgeous jacket......simplicity at it's best :)

When you look this good, there is no shame in copycatting.

  • replied 10 years ago

    Really pretty, Rae!

  • kkards replied 10 years ago

    great look.
it's funny, you're moving to not filling belt loops, and in the last 2 months, i've been buying belts for the 1st time in years.

  • viva replied 10 years ago

Love this whole look. I wear dainty jewelry more often than chunky pieces but have a few statement pieces that i like when the outfit calls for it. I have to be careful about buying jewelry because most often it sits in the box ... I think I like the idea of wearing a lot of jewelry more than I really like piling it on. I do love this snake necklace though -- I would be tempted by that for sure.

  • Aubergine replied 10 years ago

The jacket and boots look made for each other!

I love dainty necklaces. I think they're easier for me to pull off than statement necklaces and require less effort to coordinate with outfits, although sometimes the wrong one can look prissy. Not that you'd ever have to worry about that with that great snake necklace.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous jacket, gorgeous boots, gorgeous necklace, gorgeous Rae!

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

Elegant luxury indeed!  Zap is a master at it, and it looks like you are an excellent student.

    You look terrific!

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Wow - this is completely fab - makes me wish that I had similar pieces!

As far as dainty chains, there was an article (in a link love, a while back) that suggested they were quite sexy (it was the article on dressing to look sexy without revealing skin, I think).  And I agree - they've a very understated, sexy look.  I really like them, but haven't tried pulling it off yet.

Love times a million and I am psyched I inspired you :) Amazing tee too. I stained all of my white tees and need replacements desperately.
...Side note: Cciele will forever be a swap star. Love the booties...

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

Love it. You have done it as brilliantly as Zap. I'm so glad you're enjoying those booties.

  • Vildy replied 10 years ago

This is so inspirational to me that I dug through my jewelry looking for the dainty pieces I haven't worn in years. I've been souring on too much accessorizing but never had considered that little bit of glitter as a possibility. Your whole look is just perfect.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Fab copycat! I love the necklace and FWIW, my hubby bought me a beautiful dainty necklace for Christmas and I love it and plan to wear it often. I think the smaller pieces are great for when you don't want to have your jewelry shout out "hey - look at me".

  • gryffin replied 10 years ago

Rae - absolutely adore this look.  I am a die hard minimalist and you have two understated but but powerful pieces, letting the being the chief players against a neutral backround not only lets them shine it lets YOU shine.  We see elegant, chic Rae.  So glad you kept the booties!!  Wonderful with the jacket (yay Zap!!)  Totally marvelous!!

  • replied 10 years ago

And re. Dainty vs. substantial necklace, I wear both. It depends on the outfit. If I have a top with a pattern or like here, something on top with some interesting details, I go dainty. If the opposite applies, I do an ole big one.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

    Killer

    Aren't those booties super comfy?

I am on Team Teensy Chains too. Looks fresh.

  • MsMary replied 10 years ago

Wow, Rae!  This is super fab from head to toe!  I have also joined Team Dainty Chains, with the pendant I had made from my erstwhile engagement ring.  I wear it almost every day and am really enjoying it.

  • Adelfa replied 10 years ago

Love this look and am grateful for ideas on how to soften my beloved black and white.

I never got into statement necklaces! I expect to always be a pendant on a little chain girl.

  • rae replied 10 years ago

Hehe, thank you for enabling my fashion thievery, ladies! And it is nice to see that many of you are also enjoying subtle necklaces.

Amiable, I see how they can be sexy. If they are dainty enough, you have to get close to see them or recognize the pendant design! O_O

Zap, plain tees were a revelation for me in 2013. Thankfully I did not destroy them all in one year, but I did have to replace my black ones. They just get worn into the ground...

Angie, yes! And weird, they are most comfy to me sans socks. Which is fun, because then I almost feel like I have furry feet (yes, that idea tickles me for some odd reason).

  • shedev replied 10 years ago

Nice outfit. I like the look of dainty necklaces but I break them quite easily.

  • K. Period. replied 10 years ago

Very nice! I love how the restrained color palette lets the luxurious of the jacket and boots shine.  So pretty, Rae!

I love a delicate necklace and chain too.  I started wearing a few of my older ones last summer.  I went through the effort of extending several of the chains and it was like magic.  Necklaces that I didn't really love before were suddenly brilliant because they were hitting at my necklace sweet spot. Funny how you learn those things.

  • unfrumped replied 10 years ago

Great example of neutrals being anything but boring.

  • Jjsloane replied 10 years ago

I love the look. I believe in equality for all chains. I'm obsessed with my statement necklaces most days, but am hanging on to dainty chains and longer pendants because it's just nice to switch it up.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Fabulous! You look gorgeous in that beautiful jacket and the booties are equally fab.

I am pretty much not wearing jewellery at all except for simple stud earrings and my cuff, but I can imagine returning to some dainty necklaces for a change, especially in summer.

  • JulieJohn replied 10 years ago

How funny, I was going to hearken back to the same article Amiable referenced about the teensy chains. And I find myself gravitating to them as well, so it must be fate for all of us.

The whole outfit is classy like Zap and you, but those booties send me into purrs of delight!

  • Kiwibird replied 10 years ago

SOOOO elegant, understated, simple, gorgeous!!!  I've added a jacket like that one to my wish list....

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

I think you've met all your goals for 2014 in one perfect outfit.  Love the fit of the jacket on you.

  • annagybe replied 10 years ago

    Looks good.

  • Summer replied 10 years ago

    Love it!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Looks great! Amazing leather jacket and I always had an envy case for booties...

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

Interesting thoughts about the dainty necklace.  I see them mostly layered, but it's a refreshing change isn't it?  I'm still into the collars, haven't tired of them yet.  They pack a lot of interest in one piece.

As for the outfit, this is polished casual at its best.  And I love how you've mixed high and low, or at least, swap with retail!
