Almost Black Holiday Party Outfit

It's so rare that DH and I have a dressy event to attend that I had to document this outfit - even though I only got a pic in my den, and most other guests were dressed casually after all. The hosts were dressed really festively - she in great red tartan trousers and he in a striped red jacket and bow tie - and mentioned that they liked our outfits and felt dressing up helps keep holidays special. I agree!

Once again, it was a bit rainy and cold for party night, so I wore my Frye Julias with this Black Halo dress (a leftover from a DFS fund raiser) and my cat pendant (our friends who threw the party run a cat shelter). I liked how the boots added a funky touch and also kept me warm without tights, since that would have been altogether too much black for me. Close-up to show the fun and flattering tummy draping on the dress.

DH said he's glad I'm recording this "good, functional outfit" for posterity. :)

Your new hair cut and smile are cute enough, Rae, but this outfit is simply smashing!!! I agree with your DH, this is one outfit worth recording!

  • Lyn D. replied 11 years ago

Definitely not good and functional to me, but fab and flattering!

You new haircut is just so adorable and you rock in this outfit, it is no wonder DH wanted photos!

Rae, I'm finding it hard to keep up at the moment so missed you having your hair cut again....wow! Your outfit is brilliant, right up my alley so I only have praise for it:). But your hair...I can't stop looking at the pics, it looks amazing, this is chic, funky, edgy all at once. It looks fabulous.

the dress and boots make a great combination.

Funky and beautiful. I love your hair

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Wow, this is stunning, Rae. Simple perfection. LOVE the way the boots work with the dress. What a clever idea to pair them. And your hair continues to make me want to sing.

Love the details on this dress, love the black shoelaces, love your hair. Okay, enough gushing! YLF

This is great! I can see your UWP influence, and that Black Halo is such a cute LBD! How nice that your hosts were encouraged by you and DH making the effort to dress for their event :-) You looked fabulous and adorable!

But "good, functional outfit"? Said with a straight face? ;-)

Love the outfit - love your hair!

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

    You look great!

  • Kyle replied 11 years ago

Well, you are so sassy and fab! I think your decision to wear those boots with that dress was pure genius. Unexpected, but spot on. The perfect antidote to bad holiday sweaters.

  • Kat replied 11 years ago

I'm with Kyle...I'm loving that you paired those boots with that dress, so unexpected (for me, the kind of thing I wish I'd think of but don't often)..thank you for the inspiration, and for the gorgeous photo. Love the hair, love the dress, love the boots, but the combo together surpasses all the wonderful parts!

  • Elly replied 11 years ago

With the shorter hair, that sheath dress looks divine on you and shows off your gorgeous fine bone structure. Lookin' good Rae!

  • Vicki replied 11 years ago

Gorgeous YOU and gorgeous dress! Love the boots, too, and your haircut is divine.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Thank you so much for the kind words! Oh, and DH was paying a compliment when he called it good and functional - guyspeak, I guess.

Aw, Elly, I don't think anyone has complimented my bone structure before. That was so nice!

I'm loving your *trim* (haircut) as well! You definitely changed the shape, which I know you were after.

For the outfit, spectacular! What a fabulous, interesting LBD. When you say it was "leftover from a DFS fundraiser" does that mean you wore it to a DFS fundraiser (like Suit for the Stars)? Or did your branch have a fundraising sale of non-business attire and this amazing dress was leftover (which I find very hard to imagine!)?

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Claire, it was the latter. There was a bunch of Black Halo stuff - I think the sizes were not marked, so that may be why they were leftover. Our DFS is having a volunteer appreciation day next month, but I don't think it is anything fancy like Suit for the Stars.

  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago

Gorgeous LBD look, Rae, and very "you." This kind of dressing up is a far cry from the more restrictive skirts and dresses of the past. Just the addition of stretch to our fabrics is huge in terms of comfort. I think you looked terrific without "showing up" the other guests.

Way to go, and wear again!

  • Day Vies replied 11 years ago

Oh how I love the contrast of the gray rustic boot and a classic LBD on you. So festive and fresh, positively lovely. (with edge!)

  • replied 11 years ago

Oh. Well you lucked out then! I don't know Halo, but that dress looks pretty special. We are having a volunteer appreciation dinner in January too. Hmmmmm, better start thinking about what I will wear to that!

  • AJ replied 11 years ago

Wow! Your new hair cut is UWP-tastic and the dress is tailored-with-a-bit-of-edge yumminess! I bet the host and hostess will definitely put you and Mr. Rae on their permanent guest list. : )

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

You look so good in this outfit. Perfect! You are right, boots add tons of good funk. Love the delicate pendant too there. Still love the hair - fab, fab, fab.

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

AAAAAAAAH! LOVE! I am still broken-hearted over not being able to fit the Frye Julias. You look divine!

  • replied 11 years ago

Gorgeous frock and girl. I hope you had an amazing time.
