Manspiration Month: Tom Petty

Seems like this cool dude needs little introduction on YLF!

Tom Petty wasn't one of my childhood heroes like Kurt Cobain was, but he has sure grown on me as I've grown up. Something about his combination of pseudo-Southern sensibility and Californian colloquialisms makes his sound ever so cool and relaxed - the musical equivalent to a lazy beach dude with a drawl. Things might get bad, but Petty approaches the tough times with an almost detached and philosophical air, earnestness, and charm that makes you think everything will turn out alright in the end.

To me, Tom Petty's style is a little bit on the 70s side of the 80s - he likes those short leather jackets as much as McGuyver, but Petty needs to look like he could break out in a harmonica solo at a moment's notice. I noticed a good amount of denim-on-denim, vests, and leather, so I ran with that as the theme for my outfit. He also seems to have an affinity for a touches of drama and color, so the bold stripes and red bag seem to work well, and the subtle Americana vibe of the red/white/blue color combo feels right for an artist who's definitely been played on many a cross-country road trip.
**********
It's been a long day yesterday, and I'm barely getting dressed this morning! But to get to the point, I feel summer creeping in again, and had to go for a short-sorts and wildflowers ring ensemble. Hubs and I are off to run down a dream and have one last dance with the weekend before Monday comes!

I think you've said all there is to say! You got that fresh "american girl" look down.
    Take it easy baby ;)

Very fresh and fab! Is that top a waist coat? What ever it is, I likey! I'm never sure how much of your posting details are clues or song lyrics so I'll stop before I make a fool out of myself. Oh, and I like the ring too, BTW!

And when DH sees you from afar in your cute short shorts, he'll think to himself, "here comes my girl."

Fabulous! You look ready for a trip down Mulholland or Ventura Blvd!

Ah, one I know! Finally. Love the vest over shorts.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Yay, looks like everyone guessing guessed right! And I love the coded guesses, too, btw - much fun. :D

Claire, yes, it is a vest. It is a linen Rogan for Target that I thrifted maybe two years ago and finally decided to wear despite wrinklage.

  • Julie replied 11 years ago

Will you be meeting up with the rest of the Traveling Wilburys?

  • AJ replied 11 years ago

The only one I've been able to guess correctly these last ten days was MacGyver.

Regardless of the inspiration, this outfit is FAB. Luv that vest!

I just want to thank you for inspiring my music of the day - TP station on Pandora and had to buy a new CD because I found out it was really amazing (Live Anthology). DH said he was transported back in time since this was "our" vibe back in the day.

    Rock on, Rae!

  • modgrl replied 11 years ago

Holy Americana! Please tell me you are playing some summer concert fest in this get up. You are so Tom Petty cool, esp with just the vest and shorts in #2.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Woohooo! Can't argue with the K^K!

Rita, I will keep this in mind for a concert, if our keyboardist is ever allowed to come home long enough to play! I love the idea. :)
