Manspiration Month: Walter "Rorschach" Kovacs

OK, so only a few of you knew Rorschach. If you've seen or heard of "Watchmen" - either the movie or the graphic novel - he's the dude with the Rorschach ink blot test for a face. And he's freakin' awesome.

Walter Kovacs discovered his "real face" and what he considers his true calling as Rorschach through some pretty traumatic events, and this masked vigilante (NOT superhero, as he doesn't have super powers) tries his darndest to put the world right. He just happens to do it with a hefty amount of violence and not so much in the way of a larger perspective. Hey, when your true face is made of a weird, fashion-world-rejected fabric filled with viscous, black and white fluids, it's hard to see the world in shades of gray - that's what makes his character so interesting. His motto, "Never compromise, even in the face of Armageddon," means he is the one person in his fictional world who will always tell the truth, no matter the cost to him or anyone else.

In terms of style, I could argue that Rorschach has the most flair of any hero out there. True, he's not decked out in the kind of gaudy spandex that will catch your eye as he leaps over a tall building, but his outfit says a lot about him. His b/w mask represents the hidden truths of society - the kind you don't even want to admit to yourself and only become clear in a shrink's office. His trench and fedora show us that Rorschach's going after those truths, wether you like it or not.

My homage: black & white top and shoes, "ink blot blue" blazer, striped pants, and of course my caramel trench.

**********
ETA a Non-Comic Crowd Clue:

It's easy to watch men but, face it, dressing like them is never black and white. Sometimes I think I'll end up looking at ink blots by my inspiration's namesake!

**********
Recycle bin in alley this morning, tire tread where it was blocking my car. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended parking lots and the lots are full of meters and when your quarter finally runs out, you will be fined no less than seventy-five dollars. All of the accumulated parking tickets and credit card bills and predatory loans will pile up around their waists, and all those who cut you off on the freeway and shove in front of you in line at the post office will look up and shout “Save us!” … and I’ll look down and whisper “No.”

To say I'm terrible at guessing your references is an understatement! But I do have a lot of fun googling the quotes to figure them out. :)

On to the outfit... I love it, and I really like that trench!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Great outfit Rae - love how the boots and blouse are similar soft tones. And of course, the trench is fab! No clue from the clue though (I'm hopeless).

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

Rae, your outfits through this challenge have been as Protean as a Rorschach blot, while staying absolutely true to your own style. No getting sucked into other people's schemes of comic book inspiration and superhero costume-y silliness and neurosis...

    LOVE that blouse!

  • MsMary replied 11 years ago

I love your look! The way the light boots echo the blouse is just fab!!

I'm clueless about the clues, but I'm kind of askeered by the whole thing...

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

    KILLER!

Please make the clues easier for obtuse people like me :(

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Manidipa, you are too good at these riddles! And you made me realize I'm wearing an "ink blue" blazer - accidental, but fitting.

Jamie, glad it's still fun for you!

Hehe, MaryK, I guess the quote does have kind of a scary vibe. Oops...

You are so clever, Rae! I'd love that outfit even if I didn't know the character that inspired it. Love the way the "ink-streaked" top bookends the boots, love the silhouette. And that trench coat is wonderful on you.

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

I have no idea who today's inspiration is, but I love the outfit. Love the color scheme today, and I want to steal your blouse. (And I already have a similar blazer to pair it with!)

  • harmonica replied 11 years ago

another love for the manspiration series! i love this one too and I'd love to see that gorgeous blouse up close

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Ooh, Diana, I need to see that blazer!

Harmonica, I will snap a pic tonight when I post the reveal. It is a mabled, sort of wood-grain-like print. :)

Chrizzle, I was hoping you would know it, even though it's not really sci fi.

  • RandomThoughts (Andrea) replied 11 years ago

I would never have gotten it, though I know now who it is! Super cute outfit. Love those jeans on you (slacks?) they are a lovely fit, the bookending, etc.... I'll Watch for your later detailed post. ;-)

Rae, mine is a denim blazer, seen here:

    But yours is cooler!

  • Jem replied 11 years ago

I love your outfit, but have no idea who your "inspiration" is. I love your theme for the month, though.

  • Kirti replied 11 years ago

No guesses but I love your blouse and blazer combo :-)

  • Sylvie replied 11 years ago

No clue on the inspiration but you look fantastic as usual. I'm really enjoying this series - it's a wonderful way to build outfits and you are so good at building these clothing puzzles.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Sorry Angie and Andrea! I guess I do need to make these riddles easier. I will try and add a clue for those who are not comic fans up top.

Diana, d'oh! I was picturing a marble print blazer! I guess I see what I want to see sometimes... yours is very pretty, though, and it fits you perfectly.

  • Kari replied 11 years ago

I think there's a character named Rorschach from Watchmen, right? Haven't seen it but B. filled me in on the plot.

  • Meredith1953 replied 11 years ago

Great outfit! I broke down and had to google this so yeah... Rorschach from Watchman?

  • Aida replied 11 years ago

Love!! Ahhh so glad to see these boots in action, they're not as hard to style as initially expected yes? Nicely balanced with the blouse. This feels like "Rae in springtime" to me! Moody colors, with just a bit of white.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Aida, I felt ver ME in this as well. The boots were a breeze to style once I stopped trying to force them to play with bare legs. :)

    Adding a reveal now!

  • Chrizzle replied 11 years ago

I think I worded my earlier comment awkwardly, Rae. I'm familiar with Watchmen and I know what Rorschach looks like, even though I haven't read the comic or seen the movie. I know about him by geek osmosis or something, I guess!

What I should have said was that I *do* know who your inspiration is, but even if I hadn't known just how cleverly you referred to his look, I would have still loved the outfit!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Oops, I guess *I* was the one who worded things poorly. I meant that I was happy you guessed it, because I was sort of hoping for the geek osmosis thing when I posted. :)
