Preliminary Review: Getwear.com Custom Jeans

I'd never ordered custom jeans before, although the service has been available for quite some time. I never felt that I had complete control over the fit, details, washes, etc., and that is very important to me.

Getwear, however, drew me in with its real-time, Photoshop-esque design interface, which lets you construct, distress, and embroider with your mouse and appraise the result on a lifelike mock up - much better than choosing miscellaneous "fading" from a menu list. On this front, Getwear does very well. Designing is easy and fun, and they have pretty much all the information you need there on the design page - a catwalk video, fit descriptions. I would have liked to know the fabric content when designing, however. This information is available on the link to your jeans if you decide to sell your design, but not on the design page.

It was also very easy to put my jeans up for sale (Getwear offers a portion of sales to you if your design is purchased). After designing, you give them your email address. They send you a confirmation link, you click it, and you're set up. Mine didn't work on the first try, but an email to the company fixed that very quickly.

In terms of production and shipping times, they were spot on in my case: a week to produce, and 3 days to ship. The only negative was that the Fedex had to be signed for, so my apartment manager was disturbed for the signature. Next time, I would ship to my office to avoid this.

And now... yak yak yak, get to the final product, right? Well, it's not perfect, but it's pretty good. The jeans FIT, no gaping in the waist, nothing tight, perfect inseam measurement. The denim is thin - and don't mistake their "raw" wash for actual raw denim... this is not that heavy, scratchy stuff you'd find LA hipsters wearing unwashed for years on end - but the fabric is nice and dark, soft and not scratchy, and neatly constructed. HOWEVER, I am not their easiest customer.

I know that I have an unusually small rise by normal retail standards, so I specifically asked for a 7-inch rise. Hubs is also very picky about back pockets, so I gave them the below measurements (sans pictures - I took the ones below for my second try). The service rep got back to me quickly and asked for pictures of the jeans I wanted to mimic. I supplied the pictures and was notified when production started and when the jeans shipped.

The jeans, sadly, arrived with a 9 (!!) inch rise (is that really "low rise" on any planet?) and, while the top corners of the pockets were in the correct place, the bottoms of the pockets were angled out a lot, making my backside look really wide. I did not opt for fading or embroidery, as I wanted these jeans to be dressy for work, so I can't speak to those options.

As far as service goes, I emailed the company with my issues and got a reply the same day, asking a couple of followup questions - this is when I emailed the below pictures. I was pleased that there was no push back about either issue, and the rep said that they would accommodate me.

I can't say quite yet whether I'll be 100% happy with the jeans. I believe that, once you get all your desired measurements in, you can re-order and re-design your jeans using the same data - in that regard, it is worth it to work with the company to get the perfect fit - and it's all going to come down to that. If I can get a killer, flattering fit out of it all, for 1/2 the price of premium jeans, I'll be thrilled. So far, I'm a wide, hippy mess, but it ain't over 'till it's over.

It at least seems like the company is decent to deal with - they've made, shipped and delivered on time. And yes, there were some issues with the rise and pocket placement, but they seem to be addressing that. Good for them. Hopefully, these issues will be corrected and you will end up with the perfect jeans.

For me, it just seems like sooooo much work and hassle and I don't have the patience for it! Clearly you're a more patient person than I!

Sounds like you have it under control and will end up with a great pair a jeans..at least the company is working with you. Can't wait to see the end results.

I'd say I'm more lazy than patient! lol Trying on jeans is a long, tedious, tiring process for me, which is why I have about three jeans styles and multiple washes. I thought this would be a way to get some fun design details in without the endless search for something that fits.

9 inches was classified as "high" rise a few years ago...ah, how the times change. (-:

Hope you get it figured out. Sounds like it going to be pretty sweet if it works out!

Once you get all of those details worked out, I bet it will be great! Thanks for sharing the details of your experience!

Thanks for the review! Sounds promising that they are going to work with you to fix the problems. How do you think the fabric/wash compares to premium denim?

And isn't it funny how different rises for different people are? 7 inches is unbearably indecent on me, and 9 inches actually is "low" rise for me (3 fingers below the belly button)!

Yikes!! Glad to read they are going to work with you on the jeans, Rae. When I first looked at the pictures, I was a bit gobsmacked. Picture #3 is showing some serious smush to the tush. Do they have any explanation for what's going on, there?

I have had custom jeans made in the past, but they were Levis I had made in NYC a few years back where they scan you first, then custom cut a sew. That's where I got some of my first bootcut jeans, and I'm still wearing them.

I think I'll wait this out, and see how you get along. In the meantime, I'll stick with my Seven For All Mankind, and Hello, Skinny Jeans.

I'm really interested in this experiment and appreciate your taking the time to write out such a detailed post on it. I too am very, very difficult to fit in jeans and find the process of trying on 178 pairs then walking out with nothing to be totally exhausting and just not worth it.

While I don't fancy myself a fashionista, I do find their design/sell feature intriguing as I'm constantly looking at jeans for women my age and thinking "I could do way better than this" in the design department. Especially back when I was plus-sized, I had a choice of teenybopper hootchy mama or 90-year-old nursing home resident and that was it.

I'm interested to hear more as you test wear these.

Thanks for the great review, Rae! I admire your tenacity :)

A 9 inch front rise is quite high on most people - but usually not "belly button high". You have a very short rise (petite), Rae - did you know that? In the 7 inch rise, you still can't see your belly button! So interesting! That's why low rises work for you - you could probably go even lower and be happy :). I LOVE the way the Hudsons fit.

So you really think this process is worth it?

  • rae replied 11 years ago

I would say that the denim doesn't quite match up to premium denim. It doesn't have that heft. However, it is about the same as my summer weight Hudsons, so it's not terrible.

To clarify, the two pictures on the right are *my* current jeans. Julie, the squished effect might be because I had to mess with the photo a little bit to make the pocket seams more visible. The yoke is also hidden by my shirt when worn IRL - DH is very wary of a squished behind, so I trust his opinion. :)

Angie, I can't yet say if this is worth it or not... On one hand, I see a grand total of two button fly jeans out there. If there *was* a good selection, it would depend on whether the custom process was the same amount of hassle as a slew of orders and returns. On the other hand, it wouldn't be that hard to create a faux button fly on a pair of Hudsons... something I didn't think about until juuuuust now.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

    Well there you!

The Hudsons fit you so perfectly.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

Is it possible to take a pair of jeans/pants that you love the fit of to a tailor to have them copied in different fabrications? That might really be the way to go, especially if you can choose the fabric.

I might like the construction of the made-to-order pants, but probably wouldn't like being limited to their selection of fabrics.

    Food for thought?

I appreciate your brave trip into custom jeans territory, Rae! So many of us watch and learn from you, and this could be a great solution for many of us. I hope the next pair are perfect!
