Seriously Irritated with Pinterest

Just had to vent... Pinterest has now started suggesting pins with the tag "we thought you'd like this." Holy cats, there are a lot of them - there are more suggested pins than pins from those I follow! I try to follow carefully, and this is totally cluttering up my board. There is no way to turn the suggestions off. You can tell it to "show me less like this" but then they just suggest other things instead!

GRRRRRRR!

Oh no! Where on pinterest did you see it, Rae?

  • deb replied 10 years ago

I do not have that happening. But I have not been on today.

  • deb replied 10 years ago

Nope, just checked and it does not come up on mine.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

You can switch that feature off in the settings, Rae.

  • rae replied 10 years ago

I do not see the option in the settings... I turned off the "allow pinterest to personalize" feature long long ago and these only popped up a day or so ago

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

This happened to me too - Angie is right you can turn it off.

  • rae replied 10 years ago

where should I go to turn it off?

  • rae replied 10 years ago

So I checked again, and there is NO way to turn this off. #1 is the type of pin I am talking about. The kind with the little "i" at the bottom.

Pic #2 is what my settings look like. There is no option to turn off "we thought you might like this."

Turns out many people are as unhappy about it as I am, and this is what Pinterest said on their FB page. #3.

Are you on a mobile app rather than on a pc?  It looks like you might be and you most probably can't change your settings like this one in the mobile app. I too do not like the hard sell move but sooner or later it really had to show its hand.  Probably means the next great thing....
Anyway - hope the above is useful

Facebookization of Pinterest. I have been considering joining, but that would put me off.

I'm not seeing this at all. Maybe because I mainly use it on the iPhone or iPad app? I'll be sure not to upgrade it!

This is what they sent me in reply to my email for assistance. They said I'm part of some kind of test group (I was using my home computer, NOT a mobile device), and that there is no way to remove it.

I have deactivated my account until they can at least make this optional. I'm not exaggerating the fact that there was way more spam on my feed than pins from people I follow. I disagree with what they say about respecting my privacy - spamming me with subscriptions I did not ask for is not very respectful in my book. But again, the main thing is that I can't see what I DO want... mainly pins from you guys and Angie!

    Hi Rachel,

I'm so sorry for the trouble! We're always trying out new things behind the scenes at Pinterest and it sounds like you're a part of something new we're testing out.

The pins you're seeing in your home feed are part of our Picked For You feature. We suggest pins you might like based on what you've pinned onto your own boards. Hopefully, these pins are similar to things you like and you can find more boards and pinners with content that interests you.

This feature isn't linked to your Personalization preferences. We respect your decision for privacy - these suggested pins are only related to what you've pinned on Pinterest, not other sites you've visited.

We can't remove you from this feature. Sorry you're not happy with the change and thanks so much for bearing with us while we work to learn and improve Pinterest.

    Thanks,

That sucks! It reminds me of when flickr unilaterally decided that everyone needed the new horrible interface. Lots of unhappy users.

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

Whaaa? They put you in some test user group without your permission? That is just awful.

I was halfway dreading looking at Pinterest yesterday, thinking a switch might have been made, and I was just late getting it. I'm pretty mad on your behalf. I would be quite vocal on every form of social media about how bad the proposed changes are.

Alexandra, I'm still annoyed with the new Flickr interface. And the worst part is, the actual performance of the site could have been improved, but instead they farted around with other stuff.

The Pinterest thing reminds me of my biggest annoyance with Facebook -- the "sponsored posts" that crop up at the top of my feed. The ones from companies I will never "Like." Ugh.

  • Inge replied 10 years ago

WOW! That is just not on, adding you to a test group without asking your permission and then telling you you can't be removed. I'd be pretty furious!! I'm so sorry, Rae.

Another thing I've noticed is that when I follow some pinboards of a certain pinner, but not all, and they create a new pinboard, Pinterest automatically has me following the new boards too, and I have to manually unfollow them. Which I find quite annoying too.

Is there anything we can do rae? There are a lot of us here who use Pinterest & I for one would be happy to deactivate my account with them if we can't get them to change their minds about not being able to opt out of this.

  • Elly replied 10 years ago

Super annoying Rae-- have you thought about starting a new account under a different name or email and using that until they stop being jerks? I know that it is kinda against the purpose of deactivating, but I bet you were picked because you are a frequent user, and a new account might get them off your radar.

I find pinterest hard to use and confusing when it comes to the finding of other people's accounts to begin with. I just don't have time to create a pin world, to go with polyvore, and facebook, and ylf --- and the shopping I actually have to acomplish, and hey, my real life with the 10 hours of commuting a week, grad school, work, three households to maintain, and the SO and family relationships, let alone friendships and stupid Pinterest.
