WIW: 70s Steampunk

It seems it was my USB cable misbehaving, and not my camera (yay, troubleshooting!), so here are better pics of todays outfit, complete with bag and jacket. Thanks to everyone who commented in my earlier thread to reassure me about the boots - they drew some nice compliments today, and I felt like a superhero in them. Some mentioned that the dress reminds them of the 70s, so I have dubbed this outfit 70s Steampunk. The flower power bag doesn't argue. :)

Also included is a bonus, mother-son WIW from yesterday. Notice that hank has coordinated to match my two-toned sleeves and cream boots!

Target shirt dress - $1 via swap meet
Python belt - $2 via Goodwill Hilton Head (vacation find!)
F21 Blazer - $4 via Goodwill
Jessica Simpson Flower Garden bag - via... I think it was Amazon
Timberland Marge Wood boots - via Ebay

Looks great Rae - how did the toe rubbing work out?

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

    KILLER x2

You definitely have a preppy and classic slant to your style!

Shannon, the toe got better throughout the day - I guess this is the "break in period"? I've been spoiled with other boots. :) I may not choose these boots to hike in, like I did with my Julias, but they were very comfy for work after a while.

Angie, thank you!! I DO sometimes go UWPreppy, especially to work. Something about subverting the style really appeals to me the same way I enjoyed being a very bookish and "schooly" kid who wore Gene Simmons-esque platformed mary janes. I guess you can call it "subverting the nerd." ;)

Well there you go! This makes sense :)

Rae, I love both outfits! I get an updated 70s vibe from the 2nd outfit actually - I think it's the drape of the cardi over the flares ( and I like the way you have your shirt sleeves long with the cardi sleeves cropped). Hank is gorgeous and coordinates brilliantly!

Rae, those boots are all kinds of awesome. Both outfits are great!

    Subverting the nerd.

    LOVE this.

    Can I borrow it??

    That's what I want, too!!

Hank is so gorgeous. I want him and Max to meet.

Hello, colour-coordinated Hank! He's an absolute *pet*, Rae!

Very glad to hear the boots are getting broken in. Just tell them they're meant for walking!

And I also notice you're developing a neat little grey-brown-citron capsule there!

Glad to hear the wanton toe didn't stage a full on revolt. Dress looks super with those boots. I have to admit you got me with the last picture, though. Thought I was going to see those super cool boots under the pants. Oh well, maybe next time.

Both are great Rae. I really enjoy your style. And I love the way you often add a twist. Very creative and very you.

  • Jjsloane replied 11 years ago

I very much like both looks. Hank is too cool for actual clothing.
I wish I could wear shirt dresses yours looks so comfortable.

If it's Hank approved then of course I am right there with him. I actually liked the flares and yellow shirt in original post so will "like" it again. It is sort of loosely reminiscent of the 70's actually. Those were "my" years and the longer cardi with flares and a heel were the thing to do for smart dressing.

Your yellow trend these last two days has been fun to see - I think adding the bright in to the looks makes a huge impact.
