WIW: Baggy & Saggy - Too Butch?

For those who may not know me, I have *nothing* against butch dressing - there are tons of fab ladies on television and the streets of LA who rock that style - it's just not my style goal. As much as I borrow from the boys, I like looking like a gal. Just a personal preference.

Today's outfit feels like it might flirt with that line a little bit. I bought this too-big Foxcroft wrinkle-free blouse to resell, but Hubs convinced me to keep it. Got these skinnies purposefully baggy so I would be able to tuck at work. Started off the outfit with Aida's pearl necklace (last pic), but I ended up taking a page from the book of Angie and preferring a cleaner effect (but still tucked in a small necklace that reads "Daughter" for good measure). And of course I kept using the frilliest, girliest piece I own: my yellow floral bag.

Oh, yeah, and waffle cone perfume. :)

Foxcroft shirt - $1 via swap meet
J. Crew jeans - via Ebay
Boutique 9 boots - via Piperlime
Jessica Simpson Floral Garden bag - via Amazon

It's manish but not butch! I love that colour of blue on you BTW and really like how the belt and boots are similar toned. Your yellow bag adds another dimension of colour and girly factor. Very nice!

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 11 years ago

I think it is the sleeves that are making it look a bit mannish in the first pic but the jacket takes that away. Perhaps if you rolled them up to mid-forearm when not wearing a jacket.

I don't think you could look "manly". You are too pretty to look like a man, Rae.

I don't see butch here but I think I would like this better with different jeans. Perhaps skinnies, not so skinny slim jeans or long and leans? It's the rolled up bottom that looks kind of dated to my eye. The rest is really cute though. I like how the belt goes with the boots.

    No, not butch.

  • replied 11 years ago

Not butch for me either. I call this one menswear inspired.
P.S. I sent an email earlier today in re. next Saturday. I'm sorry I kinda dissapeared for the past few days.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

I think the fact that you are wearing tapered hem jeans, and tucked in the shirt which is pastel turquosie, AND paired it with light shoes, makes a huge difference. Not butch!

Divine with the jacket too. I am looking for really baggy jeans too - but I want them to fit like this. I tried the menswear section, but it's all too big. I wonder if I should try the boyswear section. What do you think, Rae?

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Rita, that is how I would usually wear a shirt like this, but I was feeling bored with it and looking for a change. What era does a cuffed jean date to? To me it's a retro-greaser thing, but I know I have a bit of a generation gap for many looks.

Dianthus, I thought the same and did try to roll these, but it didn't work out... the sleeves are just too big everywhere but the cuff, so I looked like Popeye with giganto biceps. I'll just try to keep the blazer on throughout the day. :)

Zap, yay! Off to my emails now!

I think we posted at the same time :)

Angie - I had a pair of button fly Levis ( perhaps 501) that fit so similar to Rae's. Remember those? Those might have been from the boys section - I stole them from my brother.

  • Elly replied 11 years ago

I'm with everyone else-- I love the look, and it is better with the jacket simply because the arms are so big here. I love jeans, have been talking about a new pair for ages after mine died in 08-- I have the opposite problem of angie though, so no tips there.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Can you have baggy and structured in the same outfit? I'd like to try something like this with my Gap BF jeans but add a structured blazer like yours on top Rae - can this work?

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Zap, I've had many a 501!!. They fit differently to these. Tighter on the thighs, saggier in the crotch and more flared in the low leg.

  • MsMary replied 11 years ago

Love this, especially with the jacket! Not at all butch, especially with that lovely feminine necklace!

And I know the question wasn't directed at me, but yes! I wear my baggy gray trousers with a structured blazer and love how it looks!

  • celia replied 11 years ago

You don't look butch at all.that blue looks very good on you and all the little/big details make the outfit feminin.

  • replied 11 years ago

    ahhhh...I see, Angie :)
are 501 button fly? Perhaps I have the wrong number.
Another "brown noser" here: Baggy jeans & structured blazer is a fab combo.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Oh yes, Zap. Button fly - which I found annoying :(. I had them in black, green and blue.

Anthing baggy that is matched with tailored is DIVINE!

  • christieanne replied 11 years ago

I don't think this is too butch at all. I did really like the pearls best but that's just my pro-pearl bias :) You do "menswear" very well and so many of your outfits have that little bit of tomboy edge - even the map bag could be menswear. Just a thought.

  • modgrl replied 11 years ago

I remember this was a big look around 2006, I had a pair of jeans that I wore like this then. It was a kind of retro greaser look.

  • Meredith1953 replied 11 years ago

I really like the outfit and don't think it overly "mannish" or butch. I like it best with the blazer and even if you don't rollup the sleeves what about flipping the cuffs back? Pairing the girly yellow bag with it is an awesome choice!

  • replied 11 years ago

I see Angie, my recollection of things is awful to say the least. How cool that Rae might be able to help you locate a similar item, sort of like a Luke Skywalker helping Obi-Wan situation...

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

Nowhere can I see this butch! By the way, am a little smitten by that combination of yellow and blue.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Wow, what a day to be busy with work! I've missed so much in this post!

Angie, these are actually just J. Crew Matchstick jeans sized up. I cannot wear boys' jeans because the rise is too high for me (must have inherited from my dad, who also likes low-rise jeans). The boy's section might work for you, though, Angie!

And Shannon, I sure hope it works, because I've felt nice and comfy all day. :)

I actually prefer button fly, since buttons don't go bad and slip down the way zippers do.

I'm happy I did okay here with the feminine details - might even try it with pumps sometime to help make it girlier.

  • Jilly replied 11 years ago

I know everyone loves this look, but it's just not my fave I've seen on you:) You're so cute, and I don't think all the bagginess does you justice. I do love the jacket on you, though.

  • Kate replied 11 years ago

    Adorable! So not butch.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Thanks for the honesty, Jilly. I think the baggy look falls under the sacrificing-figure-flattery-for-edge category. I was craving something different.

  • Sona replied 11 years ago

If this is butch I'm a dominatrix.

    enuf said.

    Have you noticed my leash??

    :))

  • journey replied 11 years ago

oooohhh! not just retro greaser and james dean, but also 1950s cowboy! you look like a feminine version of the old vintage wrangler jean ads! and with the jacket! nice! very nice!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

LMAO, Sona! I will behave, just don't come after me with the leash!

Journey, I like where you are going with this! I've fallen back in love with cowboys after Cowboys and Aliens. :)

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

Not at all. Your hair is a feminizing accessory no matter what you are wearing. Though I like a little bit of butch dressing myself, I don't think this is OTT.

  • Jonesy replied 11 years ago

I agree with everyone: Butch is not the word that springs to mind for me. I am not a big fan of the shirt on its own (the sleeves issue) but I think it looks fab with the jacket, and I love the fit of the jeans. With the cuffs and the boots, there is definitely a cowboy thing going on, but I happen to love a cowboy look, so I am into it :). I agree with Una about your hair too. If you had a crewcut, then this might look a bit more butch.

Looking forward to seeing Angie in some baggy denim! Loved your comment, Zap, about Obi Wan and Luke!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

    Thanks Rae, Zap and Jonesy!

Well. I tried on boys jeans today - ALL MILES TOO SHORT. I thought 14 year old boys were at least as tall as me?

Might have had some luck in the junior men's department but need to order the right length online. I need a 32 length and tried on a 30. We shall see...

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Good luck, Angie! Finding a new fit of denim is always a project, but it's worth it!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Thanks, Rae. It's fun to walk around in the mens and boys department and find things to wear. Men's jeans have such high rises because their indoor plumbing needs more room. My word, it's like instant saggy crotch slouch on a women's body no matter what. Just what I was after :)

  • MNsara replied 11 years ago

Butch! Never - you're just too feminine and adorable! You look like a boyish wrangler (thanks, Journey ;-)

This is a fun departure from your usual style, and it looks pretty easy to wear for a Friday!
