WIW: Bringing Red & Black into Spring

I can't not wear wintry colors, even though it's Spring, but I picked up this cropped trench at the swap meet (before May Madness, yay!) as part of my realization that black won't be going anywhere for me this season. This won't be making the cover of any S/S catalogs, but I'm at least hoping the bare arms and legs mean it's not seasonally confused. :)

Cropped trench - $1 via swap meet
AT red dress - $0.50 via swap meet
Frye Julias - 1/2 off via Dillard's (just over $200 before GCs, rewards points)
Pearl bracelet set - $1 via swap meet
Calf hair bag - 3 Euro via Italian flea market

Stay true to your own colors! Deborah did a fantastic job of wearing black and red all last summer. This looks so awesome with your spring boots. I have not seen these little tiny cropped jackets anywhere and you are finding them at the swap meet???!!! Nice!

Had to log back in to say I love this outfit! That cropped trench is so cool over this dress and of course, EVERYTHING looks fab with those boots!

I love this super cropped jacket over dress look... have been on the lookout for these cropped toppers to no avail!

This is SO you and SO gorgeous! Just enough bare leg to make it look spring-y. You look great in red. The SS cropped jacket also adds to the seasonally appropriateness--who cares that it is black. Black is a neutral, right?

Red with anything floats my boat. YOU LOOK FAB!

Fabulous, Rae! This outfit is so cute!

You have a knack for the crop jacket - and black and red are year round favorites in my mind.
I could see the dress working all summer long!

There are such things as cropped trenches? FAB outfit, Rae!

The cropped jacket just propels it into Spring and beyond. I love black and red together and the boots...well you look great in those boots.

I think the short sleeves bring the outfit reliably into warm weather territory. The cropped jacket + dress formula looks extremely flattering on you, very lengthening. If you want to de-winterize the outfit further, you could trade out the boots for sandals or shoes. Of course you already know that.

Cute, Rae! Moody colors with skin exposed in proper fabrications seems fine for spring/summer to me! :D

(Claire, I'm with you... WHERE oh where are we to find super cropped little toppers if one can't make it to the Huntington swap meet!?)

Lovely! The colour suits you so well, and the proportions are perfect too!

Rae, you are a total inspiration to me when it comes to putting colours together. I will definitely be doing red with my grey Julias, the minute they arrive.

What brand name are your boot cut pinstriped jeans you wore with your Julias. Never had pinstriped jeans, and maybe I need to try.

You look fab in this red dress! Red is a neutral and works year round! Looks great with the black shrug and grey Frye boots!

Looks totally seasonally appropriate to me! Very fab!

Whew, busy day for me! Thanks for the boosts; they helped me pick up steam when I peeped back in to take a break. You all have also inspired me to do a post on cropped toppers - I hope it helps, though the other obvious answer would be to come visit me and hit the swap meets in LA!

Julie, both my striped jeans are Hudson signature bootcuts.

That shade of red looks gorgeous on you! I think you should wear whatever colors make you happy!

  • ManidipaM replied 12 years ago

    Yay, Rae! You look super!

Thanks for the permission to break out black for summer. I have such a hard time of leaving the darker jewel tones and black and dark denim behind (it's just more practical and those colours seem easier to wear) for summer, even when I'm craving colour. Loved this little show-and-tell on doing it right! (Clearly, less is more in this case.)

You look smashing! I love you in those cropped jackets.

Red & black 2 of my fav colours. Love the cropped trench. This look rocks.
