Scouted: Super-Cropped Jackets

I'm a little high on my love for super-cropped jackets right now - for my purposes, that means something that hits above my natural waist, so it can adequately reveal my waistline while still allowing me to cover up my arms and break up the expanse of my chest. My favorite one hits around my bustilne as an empire waist would.

I've worn the look a lot lately with positive response, so I thought I'd share a few options I've come across in my online travels. There seems to be a lot out there if you focus your search on young, trendy stores. This may also help create an even more cropped look, since younger clothes may hit higher on a more developed bod.

I would wear every single one of these... I am ALWAYS on the hunt for truly cropped jackets. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

    Off to click!

Ditto Una. I am still sad I couldn't jump on the crop MuuBaa wagon last year :(

  • catgirl replied 12 years ago

Mo, I know you're SYC, but did you see this jacket from F21?

I think #1 and #5 are my top fave woven jackets. I like all three (7, 8 and 9) faux leather jackets. At $25 the one from Charlotte Russe is a steal.

I am just too short-waisted to wear this look, it hits me lower than my waist. But it's a great look on many others whose waists are in "normal" places, not so high up like on me.

    Um, Una . . . http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-losing-it Lol.
Do you know what I like or what!?

There's also this, from Ann Taylor, which I've been eying although I have more jackets than anything else already:

    I'll take 6, 8 and 9 please...oh right...I'm on SYC....crap!

  • Sara L. replied 12 years ago

I've never really tried a cropped jacket like these. These pictures make me want to at least try on a few and see how they look. Thank you for taking the time to find and post all these links!

  • modgrl replied 12 years ago

I really like all of these. I noticed that F21 has a ton. I really like this ponte striped one

Though there are many I would try if there was a F21 nearby.

  • rae replied 12 years ago

Yay, I'm glad the thread is providing some inspiration!

I REALLY want #9 myself - that color! But I technically don't "need" it to get by. Pfft, silly needs.

Denise, that has been my problem for years, but jackets finally got short enough. I could see them getting even shorter someday, almost a bolero style.

Rita, yes, there are a ton at F21! I had to stop myself from using them for every example.

Una and Mo, I ogled that blush jacket for a long time, too! Only now the sizes left anre 8, 10, and 12?? I've never seen that type of sizing before in my life at F21... I wonder if it's an error?

    Nice research, Rae!

Ultra cropped jackets can successfully elongate the leg line. I really like them too - especially over skirts and dresses.

They *are* harder to wear when you are full in the bust. Bad cut line and not enough coverage.

  • replied 12 years ago

All of them are really cute, however, I think you have much, much better ones already.

  • texstyle replied 12 years ago

    Great scouting Rae!

  • replied 12 years ago

I'm loving the white faux leather one! Thanks for doing all this work!

  • ironkurtin replied 12 years ago

I'll go on record as saying I don't get cropped jackets. I feel like they always leave a sloppy swath of shirt showing above my pants.

  • texstyle replied 12 years ago

I do tend to wear mine longer, but then again I think I feel it is a "younger" look or something. What do you guys think of a longer length with a dress (maxi in this example)?

  • shoppingisfun replied 12 years ago

I have been wanting a cropped jacket and/or some cropped sweaters lately, so those pics are inspiring to me! As a shorty, I'm looking for some ways to look taller without big heels and I think cropped layers accomplish this well.

  • rae replied 12 years ago

Ik, I wear my cropped jackets over dresses and tunic-length tops. I can't get 'em to work with regular tops, either.

texstyle, I'm not a maxi person, but I think the long skirt length works with the longer cropped jacket as well. I think the reason I like a shorter crop is because I am always thinking about my short legs.

Rae, thanks to you, I now have two things coming to me in the mail! You are such an enabler.

First, I got a white BB shirt on Ebay, like you did. Then I just ordered that white faux leather jacket from Charlotte Russe! Ack! I called my mall store first but they did not have it. I felt I needed to pounce on the $25 deal so I did. I would have skipped this item because it's so close to my cropped white denim jacket, but the *leather* will have a completely different vibe, and I think it will actually be warmer than denim in monster A/C, while still preserving that summer-y look. Plus I'll be able to wear it toowork! Thanks for scouting out this great deal for me, I really appreciate it! :)

  • rae replied 12 years ago

OMG, Claire, it's $25 now? Yaaarg, SYC cold sweats commencing... I already very, very narrowly avoided ordering the green one this morning!

  • Suz replied 12 years ago

Very interesting research! And I am chuckling at how you have enabled so many to go shopping!!

I find super cropped jackets difficult. I like them with skirts and dresses (even thought on me, they typically hit at my actual waist rather than a whole lot higher). But on ME they seem to look weird with trousers, unless the top is super low contrast.

Very interested to read that you find they work better with tunics than regular tops. I can't make tunics work for me whatsoever, so maybe that explains why I can't do super cropped jackets with pants. Hmmm.

  • Jonesy replied 12 years ago

These are some cute jackets! Along with Suz and a few others, I find them difficult too. I just don't think they look good on me, maybe because of the combo of height, broad shoulders, and barrel chest :). But I will admire them on you and others!

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Eeep I totally want that white one! Does their sizing run similar to F21?

  • ironkurtin replied 12 years ago

Rae, on what planet do you have short legs?!

  • rae replied 12 years ago

Aida, I'm sorry to say I am not familiar with their sizing - there just isn't a Charlotte Russe at my local mall. :(

IK, the fact that you say that makes me smile - it means all my painstaking efforts to elongate them are paying off!

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

I bit and ordered so guess I'll soon find out about the sizing. THANKS RAE :D :D

  • rae replied 12 years ago

Yay! I hope it works out!

  • replied 12 years ago

Now Aida and I will be white jacket twins! Woot! I just went by the size chart and my fingers are crossed!

  • citygirldc replied 12 years ago

Looks like I'm going shopping. Thanks for the info Rae.

  • Aida replied 12 years ago

Claire, me too! I'm usually a size up in younger fast fashion stores (eg Forever 21) so I am hoping that, for once, the size chart is accurate and that I didn't actually need my normal size. Fingers crossed for both of us!

  • cciele replied 12 years ago

I love cropped jackets! I totally want a khaki - military style one. And then what do you know, I was browsing Rue La La and bam! fell in love with this James Perse cropped number, on discount for $39.95 (and I had a credit too):

(BTW, let me know if you need an invite to Rue La La, although I'm pretty sure most of you are on it by now :) )
