WIW: My Boyfriend as a Preppy Pirate

#1-2 is what I'm wearing to my friend's house to help her shake up her closet. She's awesome and has agreed to let me feature her on my shopping website whenever I get that going. I think it will be a fun day for both of us - she is looking to bring her funky street style into her office wardrobe and also see if she can style things a la Mad Men - could I ask for a more fun and guinea pig?

#3 is the version I wore to the swap meet in the morning, since I needed to be a little warmer.

DH said to me as I got dressed, "You've been wearing those jeans a lot lately. You do know you don't look as good as normal in them, right?"

I told him I knew he'd say that, and that yes, I am aware they aren't "sexy jeans." He seemed to accept this explanation - so beware, regardless of the official style name of Sexy Boyfriends, it seems some men don't find them very sexy!

I am wearing them anyway. :)

LOL, our funny hubbies. But his reaction is very understandable. At least he thinks you normally look good.

I think you look really cute, although perhaps slightly less sexy than normal... ;o)

You look so good in that citron colour Rae and it goes great with your striped top. Hubbies are a funny lot aren't they?

Who said we need to dress sexy all the time - or any time for that matter?:-)
I like your baggy boyfriends and I think you look cool - and I take cool over sexy any time!

Cute! I am especially taken with outfit #3!

My hubby is skeptical about the boyfriend jeans trend, too!

OMG, you were MADE to wear those jeans. I don't care what hubby says. Tell him to used to the "new normal".

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Heh. I think the hubbies are just JEALOUS of the sexy boyfriends.

  • Jamie replied 11 years ago

Hmm. I don't know. To me, there is always more allure in what is not immediately obvious. :)

  • Jamie replied 11 years ago

And BTW, you look very good in those jeans!

Shiver me timbers! Perhaps that landlubber husband of yours just needs to get used to you in a different denim silhouette. :)

On a more serious note, Rae, I have the same reaction every time a new (and especially, slouchy) fit is introduced - my eye recoils first and then often adjusts. Right now, I'm having trouble getting used to the very baggy/dropped-crotch boyfriend jeans, which to my eye does not look as flattering as the slightly oversized BF jeans. I'm wondering if part of my reaction is from growing up in the 90's and HATING the exaggerated "sagging" look of how teenage boys wore their jeans back in the day. But your outfit here is kind of bridging that gap for me. I know that this is baggier than your normal jeans and I know how long your legs are *grin* but to me, the fit of the jeans is still close fitting enough that it doesn't give me the "saggy diaper" vibe that many of the drop-crotch boyfriends make me think of. It's not figure-hugging and maybe it's not "sexy" like a tight fitting pair of jeans, but it's still cute and - to my eye - flattering to your frame.
Anyway, I like the fact that you challenged my perceptions about the baggy boyfriend trend with this look, and got me thinking about my definition of "flattering." I'll be mulling it over for a while, as usual, probably until the trend starts to either die or become utterly mainstream. :) Thanks for posting this and for giving me something to think about!

Poor hubby! I really like this look on you Rae. I find these BF jeans quite figure flattering and more appealing than some I have seen. That citron color is just gorgeous on you. Hope you had fun with your friend.

Thanks for the BF support, ladies! I wore baggy Dickies pants all through high school, so this look actually feels pretty comfortable and right. The crotch does not pull or stick out, so I think that helps avoid the very prominent dropped crotch look that even I do not like on some pants - crotch down to the knees = no thank you!

Kari, I am glad you are looking at these in a new light. I know just what you mean about the negative perceptions, only for me it was also the very baggy pants of the gangsters around my hometown. I feel like even the girls would wear huge jeans with wifebeater shirts for a very butch and aggressive look. I don't think this look is *quite* as baggy as all that because of the tapered legs. Much more feminine, IMO.

I pinned you without saying how KILLER #1 is. Shame on me :(
