Manspiration Month: Captain Malcolm Reynolds

Looks like Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds, Captain of the Firefly, hero of the "Firefly" series and "Serenity" film, and heart-of-gold space pirate extraordinaire is popular here on YLF! And what's not to love? On the losing side of a war against Imperialism, he still manages to cling to small freedoms, eek out an existence using his own special talents, and thumb his nose at the authority that threatens to homogenize even the far reaches of space. Mal may have been jaded, but he still sticks close to his own moral code and protects his crew ferociously. That's more than I can say for myself -- and I've never lost a war.

As for style, Mal rocks in digs most likely left over from his fighting days - his brown coat was a signature of the resistance ("Brown Coats" being a similar term to the "Red Coats" in our own reality). He's unconcerned with the elaborate displays of the inner planets and dresses for utility - tall boots, serviceable and muted garments, suspenders - very Han Solo taming the Wild West. In homage, I donned my rust sweater, brown blazer, cognac bag and boots, and rifle shell necklace. As "Firefly's" opening credits state, you can't take the sky from me!

**********
Sometimes, getting dressed is a lot like catching fireflies - there are a lot of gorram misses, hopping about space, and feeling mal-content about not owning a brown coat. But if you guess today's inspiration, I'll be able to get through work with a sense of peace and serenity.

PS: that's a linen skirt - it fits fine, I just have to make peace with the crease...

  • Jonesy replied 11 years ago

Well, shoot, I'm pretty confident I know what show you are referring to, but I know none of the male characters!

Anyway, you look fab, as usual!

  • cinnamon fern replied 11 years ago

    Mal Reynolds!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

You look earthy, fab and rich! Rock that creased linen, girlfriend.

Totally stumped as far as the inspiration goes. I need more tea.

The boots are perfect with this outfit!

Poop - don't know this one. But I do know the outfit is great! Personally I love linen, wrinkles and all!

  • christieanne replied 11 years ago

No idea who you are inspired by (I really need my DS to read your daily posts) but they must be stylish! Love the linen skirt and earth tones.

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Malcolm Reynolds! I knew it was the captain of Serenity from the Firefly show, but I had to look up his name. Love the bullet necklace and the linen skirt and rust top!

Haha got it from all your hints-dropping. But the outfit is spot on.

Once I figure out how to upload my pics easily, I'll have a bunch of menswear inspired pics to compare with yours - -it's part of my rubric although as a " mature" professional I look totally different ( and no superheroes).

  • Erica replied 11 years ago

My first thought was Milo from Atlantis because of the crystal haha :) You look amazing as usual!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Yes! Great fun with the guesses this morning!

L'Abeille, I am very excited to see your looks and hear more about the rubric. :D

Mal Reynolds of course! I love that show! Joss Whedon is genius!

  • annagybe replied 11 years ago

I knew it was Firefly but couldn't remember the character.

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

I knew the show too but couldn't remember the character. Lots of UWP influence there!

  • Chrizzle replied 11 years ago

Yay! Captain Mal is one of my favorite fictional characters ever! Love your Firefly puns/clues, and your outfit is fab as always.

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

Fantastic outfit, both as rendition and on its own! That necklace is gorgeous, Rae, and you rock browns and earth tones like nobody's business, much as you shine in sours!

  • Aida replied 11 years ago

Love it, and those boots are almost TOO perfect with this outfit!

(I guessed Mal right away, but you know those boots actually look like something Zoe would wear! I loved her wardrobe.)

  • fern replied 11 years ago

Yay for manspiration. What's the fabric of that blazer?
I think I'm going to go watch that show again for the costumes :)

  • replied 11 years ago

I like you in these browns, especially the dark chocolate blazer! Nice crystal bullet necklace, too!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

    *Group hug!*

I can't tell you how much I love that so many got this right. "Firefly" got a super bum deal when it aired, because the network aired the episodes out of order and completely butchered a beautiful story in the process. Mal is a wonderful character and part of a truly amazing ensemble cast - I watch this series over and over again!

  • MsMary replied 11 years ago

    Malcolm Reynolds!

    *swoon*

And holy cow, you not only nailed his style but you looked completely fabuloso while doing it!

I do loves me some Captain Mal...

  • Nadya replied 11 years ago

    Echo swoon!

    Can't stop the signal!

I was looking through photos of Jayne after reading this post thinking I should do one for him.

Then I realized I could pretty much use ANY "daily" outfit of mine and I could say it was inspired by the Hero of Canton. Can you tell I'm a huge fangirl?

  • fashionista replied 11 years ago

Ooohh La La...Rae...you look hot and cool, chic and rocker, sexy and cute, bold and sweet all together. How do you do it girl?????

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Andrea, I had a harrrd time deciding between Mal and Jayne - still might have to use him later in the month! Maybe on a weekend? Canton was possibly my favorite episode. :)

Thank you, everyone, for your non-Firefly-related compliments as well.

  • harmonica replied 11 years ago

Love the outfit and the manspiration project you're at! Impressive, creative and fun! :-)

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Ah! This is the first time that I have laid eyes on your manspiration, Rae. KILLER incarnation :)

  • modgrl replied 11 years ago

Every day looks like Indiana Jones to me! I love what you've done here!!

  • Kari replied 11 years ago

I'm late to the party but can happily say I would have got this from your hints and especially from the picture. The bullet necklace is perfect! You look rather like a dressed-up Zoe.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

    Thanks for the boosts!

Rita, I had to laugh... when I started brainstorming for this project, I had a big ol' list of Harrison Ford characters and not much else. :)
